Poorly Cooked Food for High Price

Went to the Ballard location on Sunday. Wife ordered a southwest benedict dish. The eggs came back hard poached (unasked for). My omelet had all the prosciutto lumped on one side of the eggs, and the eggs were overcooked. The potatoes were soggy and the measly, single piece of toast was sawdust dry. The waitress was distracted and service was spotty. Prices are stupid expensive for the quality of what you get. I always think I should like this place before I go there, then I regret it afterwards. Kind of like Dick's.

organic does mean good!

if you want poison on your food then that is fine, meanwhile I will not get cancer due do what I eat. Portage Bay Cafe is great because of the organic choices and of course the breakfast bar. I read in the new york times about a guy who came out from new york and mentioned the Portage Bay here's the link: http://travel.nytimes.com/2006/08/04/travel/escapes/04hours.html?pagewanted=2&sq=portage%20bay%20cafe&st=nyt&scp=1 Its long I know, its under Penance and Hash.

Yum.

This is my favorite breakfast place in Seattle. Everything I've ever had here is excellent. There is nothing more to be said. [insert Mudede-like philosophical dictum here]

Delicious!

Everything about this restaurant - the ambiance, food, waitstaff, and prices is exceptional. I have never tasted such delicious and filling food in my life. I'd go there everyday (or every weekday) if I had the money to spend.

Organic does not mean "good"

Yawn. While egg dishes are still my bane, I can enjoy them from time to time if, and only if, the cooks know what they’re doing. Portage Bay still seems to hold the theory that as long as you slap “organic” in front of every ingredient, you can charge $2 more per plate. Organic blueberries, organic flour, organic sugar…Portage Bay almost reads like the heaven of the UpTight Seattlite. And unfortunately, that’s the key. If I’m shelling out $4 for fresh-squeezed orange juice, I’m also not going to expect that I need to take my waffle cafeteria-style to the buffet bar to get toppings. Ah, but as long as those toppings that I must squeeze my way through the overcrowded room to get to are, in point of fact, organic, it must be a marvelous dining experience. The watery eggs and undercooked bacon, slightly soggy waffle (from the egg water) and the fact that pushing my way through the room to get my all-organic corn syrup for my waffle means that organic or not, I’ll stick with the Rusty Pelican or the Coastal Kitchen for breakfast.

seconding the breakfast bar concept

This isn't the place to get eggs and bacon. This is the place to get pancakes, waffles, or french toast, and then pile your carbohydrate of choice high with fruit and cream. The coffee's really good here, too, I always forget to ask what they're serving.

lux brefa

Two words: breakfast bar. You get your waffle , p-cakes or french toast, then go up and dig into fresh berries, bowls of frosty whipped cream, warm maple syrup, whipped butter, fruit. A few more words: local and organic ingredients.

No, the wait is NOT worth it

Nice little joint with a friendly waitstaff, but I went on a weekday, when there wasn't a crowd waiting half an hour for a seat, ordered a breakfast platter, and got a disappointingly light platter of eggs, potatoes and toast... for which I had to pay about $8 not including tax and tip. Don't get me wrong, it tasted nice, but sorely lacking for a place where you have to wait 30 minutes for a table and pay more than average for what you eventually get. I just don't understand the herd sometimes.
