• If "cafe and wine bar" implies modesty of scale, downtown's Purple Cafe & Wine Bar defies expectations in the grandest way. The place is vast—at its center is a two-story-high steel tower that functions as a gigantic 5,000-bottle wine rack, accessed by an exterior spiral stair. The array of menus at the various branches of Purple—wine, tasting bar, dinner (including pastas, salads, pizzas, entrées, sandwiches, sides), cheese, dessert—overwhelms and sometimes overreaches. The bar snacks are the best bet: raw fish crudos, bruschetta with fancy toppings, small plates of smoked tasso ham or trout, upgraded grilled cheese. While tables full of young professionals dominate, all kinds of people seem to find their way here—Kathy Lee Gifford loves it.
