Walking to Werner

This locally produced documentary starts out as a thought experiment gone crazily real: Filmmaker Linas Phillips resolves to walk from Seattle to Los Angeles to meet his hero Werner Herzog (a big fan of pedestrian voyages himself). But as Phillips starts his pilgrimage, the larger-than-life characters he meets share increasingly intimate secrets and beliefs, and the movie turns into a wonderfully blunt exploration of the varieties of religious experience in America. Voiceover from Herzog, reappropriated from the audio commentaries on his DVDs, provides a sort of ad-hoc gospel, at times hilariously tongue-in-cheek, and at times meditative and earnest.
