An unevenly acted but otherwise stellar film,
Amu is getting a second Seattle screening at the
Aaina Film Festival. A coming-of-age tale composed like a mystery,
Amu aligns the suppressed history of an Indian-American girl's adoption with the silent legacy of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in Delhi. First-time director Shonali Bose works the tension of culture clash masterfully, and any awkward moments are quickly forgotten in the forward pitch of her narrative. I defy you to leave the theater with dry eyes. With
Choices, a five-minute silent film that deals with India's societal preference for sons over daughters.
