"Simply, if you're a dickhead, he bites. Calculates your character, and then he bites. And he's also really loyal." So says Gardar, a frightening but well-intentioned thug, about his dog (and, you know, himself) in this meandering love letter to Icelandic loneliness. A triptych of sons and mothers try to make things work in grimy, black-and-white apartments. There’s tow-headed Gudmundur, a friendless teen with a string of belly-up goldfish. Marino, the middle-aged schizophrenic, works hard at the pharmacy and collects obituaries. A country without guns reminds you of the danger of human fists. And it's all funnier, and sadder, than it sounds.
