The night before, I’d fallen asleep to a Wal-Mart commercial featuring Shrek spouting musty urban catchphrases including, but not limited to, “Talk to the hand,” “All up in your grill,” and “Oh no you di’int”; it made me want to die. The next morning, I watched Janis Cimermanis’s The Three Musketeers, and it made me want to live again. Re-creating Dumas’s swashbuckling classic with richly textured stop-motion puppetry, gorgeous sets, and a quietly witty script, the film is adorable but never cutesy, and features no death-inspiring catchphrases. Suitable for ages 6 and up, in English.
