Generic title aside, Running on Empty is the product of a distinct sensibility. Like a noir antihero, traveling salesman Berkhard (who looks like Ryan Gosling's German cousin and laughs like a depressed hyena) has retirement in his sights. The film is shot mostly at night, and writer-director Bülent Akinci edits sequences together to generate disorientation rather than clarity. The more life-insurance plans Berkhard sells, the more disoriented he becomes. Apparently, the trade hasn't changed much since the Maysles brothers' brilliant and unsettling Salesman. Recommended to fans of Aki Kaurismäki and existential road movies like Radio On.
