If you find emotive theater people particularly trying company, as I do, you might not want to spend 102 minutes listening to Tony Kushner—writer of big, epic, American plays—and his friends philosophize sloppily on such subjects as war, Brecht, capital punishment, black people in Louisiana, and the simultaneous invention of democracy, theater, and empathy. (Coincidence? They think not.) Also, theater on film is notoriously cringe-worthy. But if you’re curious about what Kushner has been up to since the iffy Homebody/Kabul landed at the Intiman, by all means, take a look. The art transcends the artist.
