Shabu Chic is at the back of a shabby strip mall near 12th and Jackson. Inside, it's small but sleek, and you sit at a marble counter to enjoy your shabu shabu: slim slices of raw beef and vegetables that you cook yourself in bubbling broth. American Kobe beef is offered, but the less-expensive rib eye is delicious; two of the kinds of broth, spicy miso and traditional seaweed, are solid, and the other, sukiyaki, is superb.
