A select group of hipsters and rockers are making some interesting eyewear choices this summer. The glasses are big, usually jet black, and before they became the Ugg boots of eye protection, they were usually spotted on little old ladies waiting for buses.

They’re called Sun Wraps, a generic name for huge plastic sunglasses that used to be marketed exclusively to senior citizens. Old folks took to Sun Wraps, AKA Solar Shields, because they could slip them on over their clunky prescription eyewear. Now they’re being spotted in the clubs and friends have been asking me where they can get a pair.

You can find new Sun Wraps at Bartell Drugs for $7.99 in green, black, and amber, or order them online at the websites noted above. Used pairs can be found at Value Village for 99¢ in the eyewear troughs near the checkout lines.

My friend Niall, a music promoter from Glasgow, picked up three pairs from Value Village when he visited in June. Inspired by club-goers in Seattle, Niall decided to introduce Sun Wraps to the UK. He and his friends started wearing them out, and they quickly caught on. Sun Wraps have been spotted in London now too. But this is one fashion trend that Seattle got to first.
