Solo is a great neighborhood spot.

The bartenders here are competent and friendly. The atmosphere is improving all the time from what I've heard people describe as an "Ikea nightmare" to something more homey and distinctive.

They have a great wine list and the food is really excellent. As in, much better than you'd expect at a bar. The menu here is not an afterthought like a lot of bar food is. This is the kind of food you'd go to a restaurant to get. It's fresh, original and delicious. I'm a huge fan of the veggie pot pie, which is hearty and flavorful - perfect comfort food. The mole tacos are also damn good - just spicy enough. Did I mention that the food is also very well priced? You will be surprised at how little you have paid for the quality.

Solo great for gastropub small plates and quiet conversation

We arrived around 8:15 for dinner, but were informed that the kitchen might be closed! Egads, the kitchen closes at 8PM on weeknights? That's too bad because we thought the food was really good gastropub fare and the steady trickle of patrons made me think perhaps they shouldn't have closed so early. I do wish there were more full size plates as they serve pretty much tapas/appetizers - I thought my portion of pasta on the small side for $12. All the food though was a hit. The bartender managed well being the only one there serving and tending bar to a pretty full house and he makes a great martini.

The space was very quiet and peaceful for us tonight which is a big plus. There's a cozy couch on one side, another couch in front of a wall that's got a movie projecting on to it (a la Blue C Sushi) on the other and then a bunch of Ikea-like tables in the middle that feel very exposed. It's a weird mix, but maybe the idea is have something for everybody.

This is where I'd rather be right now.

Solo is always friendly and comfortable. It has somehow remained hidden from the radar of the crowds that frequent the establishments a few blocks away.

Shout out to the kitchen

Flatbread with oxtail, baby octopus .. some really tasty things coming out of that kitchen. Good for a light meal before the show. And the tab was about half of what I had spent at Crow down the street a few weeks earlier!

Yay for Solo...

Solo is a great place to come for happy hour (or any other time). The food is great and cheap, the drinks are strong and well made, the bartenders are friendly without being pushy or annoying, they play great music, the art on the walls is often interesting... and so on and so on. I'm a big fan of Solo.
