Nashville Predators right-winger Wade Belak's death has been ruled a suicide. Belak, 35, a longtime NHL enforcer who nearly set the Toronto Maple Leafs' record for consecutive games without a goal, reportedly hanged himself on August 31 in a Toronto hotel room. Belak's suicide follows that of Vancouver Canucks enforcer Rick Rypien, 27, who was found dead on August 15 after a 10-year bout with depression. The entire team of Lokomotiv Yaroslavl, a top Russian ice hockey squad, was killed when their Yak-42 aircraft crashed and burned shortly after takeoff. Those killed in the crash included former NHL stars Pavol Demitra, Josef Vasicek, and Brad McCrimmon, along with several members of the Russian national and junior national ice hockey teams. Winnipeg Jets star defenseman Dustin Byfuglien, 26, was arrested on Lake Minnetonka, near Minneapolis, and booked on suspicion of boating under the influence. Byfuglien, who allegedly refused to submit to blood or urine tests, spent three hours overnight in jail, but he didn't commit suicide or die in a plane crash, making him the luckiest player in the National Hockey League this off-season.
