Green star St. Dames Cafe (Columbia City)

Website

Located right by the Columbia City light rail stop, St. Dames is a savior. Its burgundy walls, horseshoe-shaped booths, and bountiful candlelight are romantic, dramatic, and even a little gothic. (If the religious kitsch and the electronic pop soundtrack clash a bit with the vibe, no one seems to mind.) The menu is a haven of vegetarian and vegan comfort food, with the hush puppies, a portobello mushroom "cheese stake" sandwich, and vegan mac and cheese hailed as minor miracles by the non-meat-eating sect. There's also (thank god) a full bar, with drinks like a muddled fresh-pear cocktail or a margarita made with jalapeƱo-infused tequila and muddled pomegranate seeds (virgin on request).

Great food, and perfect for Gluten-Free and Vegetarian/Vegan folk

The food is great, and most of the menu can be made Vegan and Gluten-Free. The waitstaff is friendly, and the mixed-drinks are inexpensive, interesting and tasty.

While the menu caters to just about every concern: local, vegetarian/vegan, organic - everything I've had there was delicious. Even items like the vegan risotto gave no hint "compromise", just a tasty dish that disappeared quickly.

And restaurant itself is attractive but comfortable, with a mix of tables and booths.

I hear the brunch there is amazing, and I'm looking forward to trying it out.

delicious!

Amazing vegetarian comfort food, cute/comfy dining space, friendly staff. Beer and wine menu= A- I am not a fan of the mac and cheesey, but everything else I have had has not disappointed. I have even taken picky non-veg folk here with excellent results.

Its worth the trip to Columbia City if you aren't already lucky enough to live out this way.
