Aggressively amiable, this destined-to-be-remade crowd-pleaser follows a charming man-child (Patrick Huard) slacking away his 40s in his father’s meatpacking plant. As he attempts to dodge loan sharks and stay on the good side of his cop girlfriend, he discovers that his hundreds of visits to a sperm bank have resulted in a bumper crop of responsibilities. Director Ken Scott serves up punch lines at a furious clip, with a few effective downshifts into poignancy. The second half may suffer from too many musical montages, but the cast carries it through, especially in the case of Huard’s sad-sack lawyer, who may be a John Candy in the making. (ANDREW WRIGHT)
