Teapot Vegetarian House (Capitol Hill)

345 15th Ave E
Seattle, WA 98112
(206) 325-1010
Website

Even devoted carnivores can enjoy Teapot Vegetarian House. The "BBQ pork" special is a testament to the sophisticated world of fake meats, and there's a curry-eggplant-tofu hot pot that people love. This place also knows what to do with string beans (sear 'em crunchy and garlicky) and baby bok choy (sauté 'em tender with delicate strands of enoki mushrooms). Also: vegan cheesecake.

Really good.

I'm surprised to find negative reviews here.

Yes, sometimes the service is slow. Once or twice, a dish has been brought out not-quite-hot.

But this place is GREAT. It's some of the best Chinese/Pan-Asian food I've ever had -- vegetarian or not. And being vegetarian, it's a one of only a few places I can eat knowing I'll leave thoroughly satisfied. Even my suspicious parents loved it!

The atmosphere is unique and inviting, the people are friendly, and the chefs do some weirdly awesome things with artificial meat.

Rocks in the food??? Weird. Don't know about that.

But I've recommended The Teapot to friends many times and never heard anything but good.

Favorite place

The food is the best as far as I'm concerned, very healthful and innovative! I love the fried tofu and mango cheese cake, I live in Michigan currently and there is just nothing like it available here. I eat at the teapot whenever I'm in Seattle.

good desserts

I don't understand the bad reviews! I've been going to this place off and on for a couple years-the service is always pretty good (a little slow sometimes) and the restaurant is spotless. Their "Stroganoff" is great, despite the odd name. Try the Mango Cheesecake or Gula Malacca, which is a chocolate-y tapioca ice cream sundae.

What the heck?!

I seriously do not understand the bad reviews. All the food I have had here, besides one dish ,has been so awesome I come back all the time. Do not order the brocoli beef, it is rubber-y and not very good. Everything else is very good! The almond fried tofu is simply my favorite dish anywhere. The sauce is to die for. Also, the vietnamese crispy wide noodles will make you cream your pants!

The Most Expensive Bad Food We Ever Ate!

The food needs major improvement. All the dishes we ordered tasted either like a bowl of soy sauce or a bowl of salt. The Mongolian beef and broccoli has a fibrous texture not unlike carrots, and some tasted like rubber. The sauces tasted the same in all dishes… soy sauce! The color of the hot and sour soup was a dark black color and the taste… you guessed it: like soy sauce! The tofu and mushroom dish was a bowl of thick gelatinous gravy that tasted like a bowl of salt! Teapot is overpriced for this kind of food and service. For two people, our bill came out to be almost $50.00, which included a cup of hot and sour soup, the tofu and mushroom appetizer, the Mongolian beef entrée, and a bowl of shanghai noodles. I can drink soy sauce and eat salt at home for less than $1.00, but I don’t think I will. Needless to say, this is the most expensive soy sauce and salt my fiancée and I ever ate. We will never go back again!

Rocks in my food

I've eaten at Teapot a few times over the past few years. The food never made an impression on me and I have no recollection of what I might have ordered in times past. My friend and I decided to try this neighborhood standby again just recently only to receive a dish with rocks in it. ROCKS. The wait staff did, eventually, offer me something else off the menu, but the rocks pretty much ruined my already bland meal. I would recommend that you dine elsewhere if you like to chew your food.

Its not the best, but close

I've been vegetarian for 14 years so I know good vegetarian food when I eat it. The food here is actually really good (plus the live music isn't bad), but some of the textures are too much for me. The Rose "Chicken" has a texture of almost raw chicken (almost slippery when I had it, very much like eating an almost-underbaked chicken leg) so it almost made me turn green. Other than the texture of that one dish everything else was decent, but it's no Bamboo Garden!

So-so food, poor service

The meals are hit or miss. They can be pretty stingy with the fake meat, too. On top of that, the last waitress I had (a seemingly sweet older lady) suckered us out of a lot of extra money by recommending an appetizer that was actually the most expensive ENTREE on the menu, and recommending an $8 cup of tea to my friend. (this was all after she had taken our menus, of course)

Hit or Miss

Some things here are v. good and some are scary. The straight veg, things are generally good and the fake meat... watch out. Frankly, I'd got to a good Thai or Vietnamese restaurant and have the tofu.

Addictive

This place has a special spot in my heart, though I think I got sick of it about 6 months ago. The 'beef' in creamy mushroom sauce is unique and out of this world (i think they call it stroganoff now but that's a silly thing to call it). Some of the dishes are hit-or-miss but if you find the ones you like, you'll come back again and again. Friendly service, a cool location looking over 15th, and good food. Just don't go back too often or you might get sick of it!

Your meatiefriends won't complain

There's enough variety on the menu that your meat eating friends won't complain and they won't mind coming back. Fear not veggieheaded masses!
