Bush's approval rating is spiraling downward. According to the latest Newsweek poll, he's at a dismal 42 percent. Crossing our fingers that the numbers don't improve for the crafty Karl Rove and crew, the Stranger Department of Homeland Security is putting the risk of a Bush reelection at the second-lowest, guarded Blue level, clinging on to this factoid: Since 1948, the four presidents who won second terms had ratings of 52 percent or better in May of the election year, while the three who lost (Ford, Carter, and Bush I) were at 47 percent or worse. -JF
