Renee Erickson's the Whale Wins shares a huge warehouse space on Stone Way with Joule and an upscale outdoors emporium. It feels a little like a stage set for a European cafe, but a lovely one, and all the goodness that everyone who adores Erickson’s restaurants (Boat Street Cafe
, the Walrus and the Carpenter
) has come to expect may be found here. Almost everything is wood-fired, and while the menu may seem simple, north African flavors add interest. Of note: marrow bones, served standing up and sizzling hot, and a whole trout, deboned and crispy, resting on a bed of super-delicious walnut sauce.
