COWBOY MOUTH

Final week. "Who on earth would want to revive Sam Shepard and Patti Smith's semi-autobiographical sort-of rock musical? Who would want to play two shambling narcissists whining about how they aren't rock stars, vacillating between boredom and mania, beating on each other and then making up like a pair of married alcoholics? Apparently, the answer is people who have no idea what they're doing. " (Bret Fetzer) Narrow Escape at Rendezvous, 2320 Second Ave, 226-5508. $10-$12, 21+ w/ID required. Fri-Sat at 8 pm. Through May 8.

CROWNS

* EDMOND

Final week. "By way of this smart, painfully intimate staging, the audience is dragged on an emotionally numbing but sickly fascinating journey through the lowest sleaze-caked cesspits of mankind's worst imaginings. In between urges to shower off my soul, abscond from the human race, and take a prolonged nervous breakdown, I think I loved it. " (Adrian Ryan) Open Circle Theater, 429 Boren Ave N, 382-4250. $12. Thurs-Sat at 8 pm. Through May 8.

IT AIN'T NOTHING BUT THE BLUES

Final week. "After the raucous '(I'm Your) Hoochie Coochie Man' and the sultry 'Sidewinder,' I was ready to leap up and dance in the aisles. But the rest of the second act lost focus, trying to shoehorn well-known songs like 'Walking After Midnight' and 'Fever' into the blues tradition. Most of It Ain't Nothin' But the Blues is enormously enjoyable, but it's also one step down the road to an animatronic diorama where the blues will have no more life than the faux-Polynesian shanties sung by parrots in the Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland. " (Bret Fetzer) Seattle Repertory Theatre, Seattle Center, 443-2222. $10-$46. Thurs-Fri at 7:30 pm, Sat at 2 and 7:30 pm, Sun at 2 pm, Tues-Wed at 7:30 pm. Through May 8.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM

Final week. "Though director Arne Zaslove has some fun applying shtick to the four mismatched lovers, the rest of the play comes across as a chore he had to get through. To bend the rules of a genre, you've got to exercise some imagination and wit. If what you really want to do is stage a revue of old songs, leave Shakespeare out of it. " (Bret Fetzer) Seattle Shakespeare Company at Center House Theatre, 305 Harrison St, Seattle Center, 733-8222. $18-$24. Thurs-Fri at 7:30 pm, Sat at 2 and 7:30 pm. Through May 8.

PROOF

SAUCY JACK AND THE SPACE VIXENS

Final week. "As the producer, director, and star, Willie LeVasseur must take the blame for Saucy Jack and the Space Vixens, a lifeless piece of karaoke masquerading as a campy sex farce. After a lifetime of clumsy, relentless innuendo and staggeringly inept dance moves, Saucy Jack had at least five false endings, each one more taunting and cruel than the last.
