There ain't a harder-workin' group of kids in this city than the kids (well, sorta kids) who run Ballard's makeshift all-ages club, the Brick House. I've written and written again about this club (which is not a club so much as a brick box on the beach with a stage and some speakers) and all the struggles it's seen.

But despite death knocking at the venue's door, Patty Hinkle, Brian Jackson, Carrie Hallgarth, D'Juan Brown, and Jason Schmidt (and, of course, a gaggle of lovely volunteers) just keep keepin' on, working with what little the Parks Department will give them. And what's the latest news regarding the Brick House's future, you ask? Great question!

Patty (an all-around rad girl) says, "Originally, the Brick House was just going to be available through the end of October 2002, but [our work] impressed so many people at the Parks Department, the renovation date was pushed back a year to fall 2003 so we could squeeze out whatever life the center had left in it. We now have till the end of August (of this year) to do what we please."

Good news, of course--but how can one rock without any money to back it up? Another excellent question! That's why the Brick House is hosting a benefit show this weekend on Saturday, March 22.

"This weekend's benefit show is [being put on] to get us out of the negative numbers," says Patty. "We started with nothing, and basically worked on nothing. All the money from shows that have had cover charges has gone straight to the bands--we've never taken a cut. [The Brick House survives on] donations and what measly amount we make with concessions."

So, unlike so many of the Brick House's past shows, this one ain't free. But it's still cheap--only four bucks. And the Feverpitch (formerly the Pinehurst Kids) are headlining the show with openers the Senate Arcade, Laymans Terms, and other special guests. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.
