If you were planning on going to the AFI show this coming Friday, April 4, but neglected to play it safe and buy your tickets early, I have some bad news for ya: The show is sold out. In fact, while I write this, half of the 20-plus-date tour is sold out (with the remaining shows to soon follow suit, I'm sure).

But the desperate (and filthy rich) could always risk it and search online for people selling their extra tickets. Last time I checked, quite a few pairs were posted for sale on eBay, some going for over $130.

"That's the negative aspect about the level of dedication our fans have," said AFI's bassist, Hunter. "Somebody out there is realizing how much money our fans are willing to pay and buying up all the tickets and reselling them on eBay. It sucks because whoever's selling these is obviously not a fan, and our fans are put in the position where they have to buy their tickets off of eBay if they want to see us play."

But AFI fans are notorious for their insane amount of devotion (just visit the band's website at www.afireinside.net and take a look at the tattoo photo gallery for proof). And if I were left without a ticket, I couldn't say I wouldn't consider slapping down the big bucks to catch the show myself. I've seen AFI live five times and every time it has been amazing.

Their music is indefinable. (Dark, emotional rock with an edge, maybe? But of course there are those pockets of metal and hardcore too. And punk. Screw it--just buy a CD if you want to hear it.) And at their shows, everyone in the crowd sings along with every song, filling the room with so much noise and energy. The crowd's energy is contagious, fueling the band to play harder and louder, pouring themselves into their songs and back into the crowd. You'll have to take my word for how cool it is.

While I spoke with Hunter he was in high spirits, looking forward to the upcoming tour. He even let me in on a few secrets regarding the upcoming show.

"We have some banners," he said with a laugh. "Extra-fancy banners. And we have a light show!"

I wondered if it was going to be Laser AFI.

"Really, we just have a light guy."

But all jokes aside, Hunter assures me that AFI's show is going to be the same, even if the band's music has evolved over its 10 years (!) of existence. "We're still going to put on the same energetic performance," he said. "And I know that there will be a huge group of fans there singing along." MEGAN SELING
