FRIDAY 11/15

SCREAMING FEMALES' ECSTATIC SHREDGASMS

Anyone who's ever thought, "Punk rock is bullshit," there is a show for you tonight. Get down to Black Lodge, where New Jersey's irrepressibly fun and crafty basement-punk phenoms Screaming Females will shred their ecstatic guitar jams. Having played together since 2006, the trio has five full-lengths and manifold tours under their (studded) belt, and their most recent single, a split with Wisconsin punk trio Tenement, is the soundtrack for haters to disarm to. The Screamales' full-bodied sludge-guitar swirl is well-polished on "Ancient Civilization," but in a way that also doesn't sacrifice its raw immediacy. Last year's indie rock epic/Steve Albini–produced album Ugly set the band up to transcend DIY punk into the world of NPR dads, for the universal reason that Screaming Females rule. But if you need additional convincing, vocalist/lead Screamale Marissa Paternoster is also BFFs with '90s alt rocker Shirley Manson; right before collaborating on Patti Smith's "Because the Night" onstage, the Garbage frontwoman praised Paternoster for being one of the "girls who don't want to get sexed up in their videos and show their tits." They have since recorded the cover in the studio with equal parts big guitar solos and indie-rock earnestness.

Sharing some of Screaming Females' tour dates this time around are Upset, a super-sweet supergroup of garage/grunge ladies Patty Schemel of Hole, Jennifer Prince, and Ali Koehler of Vivian Girls. She's Gone, released October 29 via Don Giovanni Records, is a whimsical pop-punk debut that should translate into a fun live set. Continuing a lineup to distress button-ups are Eastside post-rockers Darto, who get diabolically emo on their debut LP, In Difference. Dosed with cerebral, Slint-obsessed qualities, their sound wanders in a half-comatose state, with driving riffs occasionally imploding into noise crests of trancelike sublimity. Local punks Big Crux should also convert anyone with ears, if their latest EP, Nature Cruising (Iron Lung), is any indication. Fans of Minutemen and Big Boys will have lots to revel in here; prepare for a wildly energetic funk-punk groove attack. Black Lodge, 9 pm.
