Before I tell you about the Moped Army show happening this weekend (it's worth the wait, trust me), I just have to give huge props to Mr. Chris Cab, who organized last Thursday's Jawbreaker cover night at Graceland. The attendance was awesome and all the bands played really well (Tourist, your moodier version of "Jet Black" gave me chills), and I'm not the only one who thought so. That's right, Jawbreaker bassist Chris Bauermeister (who currently resides in Olympia) made a surprise appearance, and he spent the entire night hanging out with fans and congratulating the bands on a job well done.

"As a musician I've always loved cover songs, and because I was always playing them, I've never heard those songs live before," Bauermeister said with a big smile post-show. "It's very cool seeing other bands playing them. Autumn Poetry's version of 'Accident Prone' was better than our own!"

He also went on to say how exciting it was to get a new outlook on his records, especially Dear You.

"I know now it is a pivotal record, but at the time, Dear You seemed wussy," he said with a laugh. "I enjoyed hearing those songs tonight a lot more than I did at the time."

Don't feel too bad if you missed out, though, because Cab says he plans to do the night again in December.

And now, as promised, here's the info for Seattle's annual Moped Army gathering. The Moped Army is a national organization that started in 1997. It comprises 16 branches and it's over 200 members strong. Seattle's branch, the Mosquito Fleet, has more than 30 members itself, and every year they dedicate an entire weekend to daylong rides and other moped-friendly activities (so if you hear that distinct buzzing of dozens of 50cc motors coming down the street, that'll be them).

Not only are these Mosquito members fans of mopeds, though, they're also big music fans--indie rock mainly--and many of the Fleet kids are also musicians themselves (for example, Damien Jurado, Rosie Thomas, and David Broecker are all on the Mosquito Fleet's roster). On Saturday, July 31, at the Paradox (7 pm, $5), not only will you be able to mingle with the Mosquitoes, you'll also have a golden opportunity to see some of the bands they're in at a show featuring Jurado, Suffering & the Hideous Thieves, Supine to Sit, Dear Darling, Hidari Mae, Heartbeart, and DJ Mad Max.

Of course all the mopeders (is that a word?) will have their bikes on display for the curious (they take a lot of pride in their babies, even though most can't break 35 mph) and maybe if you ask nicely, they'll let you try one out. Just maybe. Either way, I promise the event will be lots of fun, as the Mosquito Fleet kids are one of the nicest gangs you'll meet. MEGAN SELING
