A Kiss Farewell are absolutely terrifying.

Hearing their dueling vocalists and disjointed, mechanical hardcore could lead one to assume that this frightening five-piece are slightly influenced by the Blood Brothers. But really A Kiss Farewell scream a little louder, play a little faster, and bust that sassy shit to pieces with mathematical metal and heavy hardcore breakdowns that would make a little kid burst into tears.

The band released their first full-length, Tiananmen Square Dance, about a month ago. The songs are intensely explosive (and slightly uncomfortable) sonic convulsions, but keep listening, because it's totally worth the pain. Influenced by the Blood Brothers? No, I'm pretty sure they could eat the Blood Brothers for breakfast.

See for yourself when A Kiss Farewell play this Friday, October 22, at the Old Fire House with the Fall of Troy and Mon Frere, two more favorites of mine. The show starts at 8:00 p.m. and costs five bucks at the door.

Speaking of Mon Frere, it's exciting news that this band is set to release a record December 3 (they've already booked a CD-release party at the Vera Project for that night too). Mon Frere's new disc--the first release for new local label Smuglife--is a totally hot, impressive blend of rock, jazz, and dance music. Singer Nouele Johnston really showcases some impressive vocal talent as she leaps between smoky, sexy melodies and more demanding hollers. Between the spastic keyboards, the intricate guitar work of Kyle Swisher, and the fluctuating drumming of David Haasl, you don't miss the bass guitar a bit. Mon Frere have come a long way since taking first place in February's Sound Off! competition (they were a band for only a couple months at the time, after all), as their continually improving live performance will attest.

All you young (meaning 21 or under) bands who have been thinking of entering the 2005 Sound Off! competition should make a note that the final deadline is November 15. That means your application (available at www.emplive.com), band bio, and CD or tape must be at the EMP building that Monday to be considered.

Past Sound Off! bands include Schoolyard Heroes, Idiot Pilot, and the HollowPoints--popular local bands who are all honest proof that good things can happen for those who make the final cut. You've got nothing to lose by sending a demo in. MEGAN SELING
