White Man's Book Does Justice to Black Power Music

PAT THOMAS Not trying to be black.

In a cosmic, roundabout way, a 1985 car accident that seriously injured Pussy Galore/Boss Hog guitarist Kurt Wolf is responsible for Pat Thomas's book Listen, Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power, 1965–1975 getting published.

You see, Wolf, a friend and bandmate of Thomas's in the Rochester, New York, group Naked Lunch in the mid '80s, has a sister named Kathy Wolf, and she and Thomas would tend to Kurt and play records and watch movies with him while he recovered in his body cast.

Although Thomas and Kathy Wolf lost contact after this encounter, they reconnected in 2008 via Facebook. Thomas was living in San Francisco and pondering going back to college while working on his book about Black Power music. Wolf, a visual and graphic artist, had moved to Seattle. Both were dealing with failing marriages. Thomas mentioned his project and sent Wolf his unfinished manuscript.

In the summer of 2009, Thomas moved to Seattle, cramming all the book materials that he could fit into his Scion xA. The couple soon formed a fruitful creative and personal relationship. Wolf made a PDF mock-up of Thomas's work in progress and presented it to her friend Eric Reynolds, a marketing director and editor at the Seattle publishing house Fantagraphics. Impressed, Reynolds showed it to his boss Gary Groth, who quickly green-lighted the book. (Groth wanted the book to be called Wake Up, Niggers, which is a Last Poets song, but Thomas and other Fantagraphics employees convinced him to go with a less inflammatory title.)

Wolf suggested that Thomas take courses at the Evergreen State College. "She knew that their brand of radical free thought would work well with my book," Thomas says. "And sure enough, the moment I arrived on campus, I was befriended by an African Asian American professor, Chico Herbison, who became my mentor for the completion of the book."

Thomas's passion for the Black Power movement and its music has roots in his days as A&R man for San Francisco–based Water Records, where he facilitated reissues of albums by artists deeply involved in improving the lot of their people: the Watts Prophets, Elaine Brown, Gene McDaniels, and Eddie Gale.

That zeal escalated in 2005 when Thomas, then living in Oakland, attended a party where he met Keith and Kent Zimmerman, who, serendipitously, were cowriting a book with David Hilliard, the Black Panthers' former chief of staff when Huey Newton and Bobby Seale were in charge. Thomas mentioned to the Zimmermans his interest in Black Power, and they gave him Hilliard's phone number. Thomas and Hilliard went on to strike up a solid friendship. During their time together hanging out, Thomas would never formally interview Hilliard, but rather he would casually coax out information about his Panther past.

"I called him up one day and said, 'You know, David, by all accounts, you should be dead,'" Thomas recalls. "He said, 'That's right. Either I should've been shot by the cops or I should've punked out when I was in prison. I'm lucky to be here.' The other thing I realized is the average age of the Panther was like 22. Think of us: We were all 22 at one point. We couldn't have dreamed up something like that. That's where the whole [urge to write the book] started."

Thomas's obsession further intensified. After discovering Brown's 1969 LP Seize the Time and helping Water to reissue it on CD in 2007, he found himself amassing more recordings affiliated with the Black Power movement. He estimates he's spent $5,000 to $10,000 on eBay tracking down obscure albums and singles in the jazz, pop, soul, folk, and funk veins.

Thomas had never written a book before Listen, Whitey!, but in the summer of 2008, he went on a writing binge, banging out 40,000 words in two weeks about, he says, "all the politics and the social changes fused with the music during the late 1960s and early 1970s."

"I compare it to Jack Kerouac, who supposedly wrote On the Road in two weeks without stopping," Thomas says. "I'd sleep like two hours a day. I was pumped up on creative adrenaline, only stopping to briefly check a date or fact or two from a book, or double check the credits on a specific LP. I knew the material so well at this point that I didn't really need to reference anything. Then I didn't write anything for months. When I got the deal with Fantagraphics, I thought, 'Now what do I do?' One of the things Kathy helped me with is we made a list of every album that hadn't been written about yet."

Listen, Whitey! reveals Thomas and Wolf's thorough scholarship, trenchant commentary, and keen eye for graphics regarding the music and political actions associated with Black Power during the tumultuous decade from 1965 to 1975. Thomas traces the vicissitudes of key figures in the movement (Huey Newton, Stokely Carmichael, Bobby Seale, Elaine Brown, Eldridge Cleaver, David Hilliard) as well as analysis of contributions by cultural icons and activists like comedian Dick Gregory, literary/music critic Stanley Crouch, and the poet/dramatist Amiri Baraka. The tome also assesses how Black Power attracted white allies like Bob Dylan, John Lennon and Yoko Ono, and, most strangely, the Partridge Family—a 1971 episode of the TV show was dedicated to the vanilla band's encounter with Black Panther members in Detroit.

Thomas, who is white, thinks that his outsider status was advantageous in the endeavor "in the sense that my book has no agenda. There's a book called The Shadow of the Panther by Hugh Pearson. He's black. I don't know him, but it's obvious from reading his book that he decided the Black Panthers were bad guys and he was going to write a detailed but very biased history."

Thomas's informal approach to interviewing former Panthers paid dividends. "Elaine Brown [the only woman to lead the Panthers] paid me a compliment," he notes. "She said, 'What I love about you, Pat, is that you're not trying to be black. People come around me and other ex-Panthers and they want to talk black speak. You're not trying to be black. You're just this white guy who's really into our story. And that's cool.' The other interesting one was Eugene McDaniels, whom I became quite friendly with on the phone. He said to me, 'You know, man, black people don't like black people like me. It's only white liberals like yourself who think we're cool.' This is going to make me sound like I'm speaking for blacks, which I don't want to do, but black militant history is maybe more controversial within the black community in some ways than it is with the whites, who experienced it from the outside."

Thomas says he realized early on that everyone he interviewed had a different spin on events pertaining to Black Power, so he focused on their human side. "Yeah, they're iconic figures, but they're not statues frozen in time. They're living, breathing people. The other important thing I learned about the Panthers: They weren't anti-white; they were just pro-black."

Thomas points out how Black Power was split into diverse factions. "The Panthers were not interested in wearing dashikis, learning Swahili, and going back to Africa. They were like, 'We're Americans. We want this. We claim this land.' Then there were black nationalists who were fixated not exactly on returning to Africa but on embracing their African roots. It was interesting to see those lines were almost driven musically. For some reason, the jazz guys were into the black nationalism thing. The soul guys were more into the Panther thing."

The Black Power movement lost steam in the mid 1970s, Thomas says, largely due to J. Edgar Hoover's COINTELPRO: "Basically a counterintelligence program against radical movements. You gotta remember, the FBI hates commies. Hoover was convinced that not only the Black Panthers but Martin Luther King Jr. were getting money from the Soviet Union and Red China."

Listen, Whitey! presents Black Power's volatile ups and downs with stunning imagery. Designed by Fantagraphics' Jacob Covey, the copiously illustrated Listen, Whitey! is a joy to behold as well as to read. Thomas covers much ground, discussing recordings by politicians/activists (Angela Davis, Carl Stokes), clergy (Martin Luther King Jr., Jesse Jackson), literary figures (Nikki Giovanni, Lorraine Hansberry, Amiri Baraka), and established jazz greats radicalized by Black Power (Max Roach, Archie Shepp, Herbie Hancock, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Pharoah Sanders).

The latter presented Thomas with one of his hardest challenges in writing Listen, Whitey! "I'm a record geek, but the one area that I'm not really able to talk about is free jazz. My research led me to see that free jazz and black nationalism were like hand in hand. So I had to figure out who the fuck Archie Shepp really was. I gotta figure out what the Art Ensemble of Chicago were all about. I gotta figure out who Clifford Thornton was. That was tough going, because I was in uncharted waters. I started circulating the jazz manuscript around to a few friends to see if there were any holes. So that was a bit of a struggle."

Ultimately, Thomas captures the revolutionary spirit of myriad vital strands of the movement and stokes your desire to hear these recordings. Partially to sate that need, Thomas arranged a compilation of spoken-word and musical tracks to be released by Seattle's Light in the Attic Records in conjunction with the book.

Listen, Whitey! The Sounds of Black Power, 1967–1974 is a provocative mix of spoken word by Carmichael, Cleaver, and Gregory, as well as a righteous blend of jazz (Shahid Quintet), soul (the Lumpen, Marlena Shaw, Elaine Brown), rock (Dylan's "George Jackson," never reissued anywhere else till now, Lennon and Ono), folk (Roy Harper), avant-garde strangeness (Kain), and proto-rap (Watts Prophets, the Original Last Poets). Oddly, it's the nonmusician Baraka who damn near steals the album with "Who Will Survive America," an incendiary soul stormer that infiltrates your mind as grippingly as any Motown hit. Thomas received permission for almost everything he wanted to put on this record, but he laments that he couldn't secure a Stanley Crouch track from his There Ain't No Ambulance for No Nigguhs Tonight LP.

Coincidentally, a few hours before our interview on February 13, Thomas received notice that somebody had removed a stack of City Arts magazines, in which his book was excerpted, from a box on 45th Street in Wallingford. This person or persons had stapled propaganda to the pages where the excerpt ran, an article titled, "Black People Are More Criminal Than White People," along with a handwritten note: "To hell with the music of Black Power! Read this!" He/she/they then placed the magazines back in the box. (You can go to www.unamusementpark.com to learn more about the people behind this stunt.)

"What's interesting about it is it's not vehement hate," Thomas observes. "It's couched in this quasi-intellectual thing, like whites are superior to blacks; it's been proven by science. 'February is Black History Month, why do they need that?' Then sarcastically saying, 'Well, they picked the shortest month, so obviously that's all they're worthy of.' We've come a long way, but Jesus Christ, man, right here in Seattle, three hours ago, we found out there's still some wacky shit going on."

Racism notwithstanding, Listen, Whitey! is garnering serious media attention—and it's kind of freaking out its author. Columbia University has invited Thomas to speak about Black Power music, English highbrow music magazine the Wire booked him to lecture at a big event in London in May, and several prestigious London universities and the University of Southern California also requested his presence. Greil Marcus is interviewing Thomas for the Believer, and Spin enlisted respected black academic Mark Anthony Neal to review Listen, Whitey!

"I don't think this is the best book of its kind," Thomas says. "I think it's the only book of its kind. I feel it's a unique angle and there's a lot of shit in there that hasn't been covered in anyone else's books." recommended

Just imagine the one guy sitting at home coming up with different writing styles for all his various online racist personalities. Its comedy gold if you just sit back and enjoy it instead of taking the content seriously.

I especially liked his deep thoughts on the nature of correlations. Today I learned, nazis have a poor grasp of elementary statistics.

Who the fuck are these idiots? The fact that this stuff happens on a message board for a supposedly urban publication is what makes Seattle a racist backwater that drives "transplants" like myself crazy. Grow the fuck up. Go back to masturbating in your mom's basement racist hatemongers.

Liberals howl in rage when anyone brings up Black pathologies, failures, whatever you want to call them.

The general thrust seems to be, "how dare you bring this up?"

Well, we didn't bring it up. We had no choice but to respond, because leftoids forced the issue. Leftoids constantly bring up Black poverty, and other Black problems, and thrust them under YT's nose. They continually blame these problems on Whites.

Then when Whites defend themselves by, essentially, saying "we didn't 'break' Blacks - they're made that way," Leftoids say we're evil racist haters.

It's a lot like having a guy born with a gimpy leg drag you into court for breaking his leg, pointing out to the judge that his he was born with that leg, and having his lawyer howl about your "bigotry." I.e., it's like watching a pack of sociopaths attack you for profit.

If leftoids didn't want YT to point out that Blacks are born "broken," they shouldn't have blamed all Blacks' failings on us. If they didn't want YT defending himself, they shouldn't have dragged him into court with a frivolous lawsuit.

Leftoids, when you find yourself in a hole, the first step is to stop digging; drop your lawsuit.

It should be obvious that leftoids have made "racism" (assault with sharpened facts) against blacks a moral duty for all just men (not just YT). A just man can no more desert YT under these circumstances than he could our analogous defendant; it's his duty to go into court and testify the defect is congenital.

P.S., "correlation is not causation" isn't really saying much. If every fifth little green men from Mars pulls out his phaser and disintegrates a human for no apparent reason, nobody's going to care much if his green skin is "causing" the behavior; the green skin simply serves as a warning.

Black people are dependent on white people for their survival and progress, whether it's in Africa, Haiti, or the United States. So any movement that wants more for black people always ends up hurting white people.

And the main way to make black people look good is to blame all black people's failures on white people.

And when given more freedom and power, black people frequently use it to attack white people.

So pro-black movements usually end up being anti-white.

Why is that author, along with the general DWL illiterati, are willing to make statements like:

"The other important thing I learned about the Panthers: They weren't anti-white; they were just pro-black."

Where they are differentiating between the two themes?

Yet when it is a white person talking anything even remotely perceived as "pro-white" they are immediately demonized as "anti-black" racists as if the two are synonymous?

That is merely one fallacy of the DWL mindset of which this book's author seems to be afflicted. As well as his use of "Whitey" in the title. Which is dubious, considering if a book were titled "Listen, Blackie" it would elicit howls of racism. Both are coarse.

"The link still exists whatever the reason, so you still need to be more careful around black people than you do around white people."

Absolutely right. Whatever the causes, the stereotypes are true. Racial profiling is rational and therefore good and therefore not "racist" (assuming "racism" is, by definition, bad).

As for the causation of the correlation: since (a) race is statistically the best indicator of violent crime levels in an area, (b) virtually none of this correlation is due to poverty, unemployment, or lack of education, (c) the racial crime gaps persist when you control for socioeconomic factors, and of course (d) blacks (e.g.) are and have been much more criminal than whites (e.g.) everywhere they are found in the world and at all times in recorded history — since all that is true, we're at the point now that one cannot reasonably deny that genetics plays a role.

But don't forget that the reason for the link between race and crime doesn't matter when you are walking down the street and see someone. The link still exists whatever the reason, so you still need to be more careful around black people than you do around white people.

"Correlation does not equal causality.

Try that on for size, you f****** grouchy racists."

Correlation does equal either causality (in unknown direction, and perhaps indirectly), causality from a third factor, or coincidence. Fortunately you can easily calculate the chance of something being a coincidence. And with a large enough sample size, the chance of a coincidence is tiny enough to ignore.

So if you don't think that race causes crime, that means you think that crime causes race, or that something else causes both crime and race, or that it's an amazingly improbable fluke coincidence.

I guess you must be thinking that crime causes race. Maybe I should go out and commit some crime and watch my face change shape, my hair change its texture, my bones change their density, and my skin change colour.

"any poverty-crime link is b/c crime & poverty both correlate with IQ."

It's partly that. I think maybe it's also partly other genetic personality characteristics (eg. agression) that cause both crime and poverty, although perhaps only when combined with low IQ.

And of course, crime is one of the main causes of poverty. Businesses don't want to set up in high crime areas, and fail when they do. They don't want to hire criminals either. And the saying "crime doesn't pay" is actually true. I think most drug dealers make less than they would working any honest job.

You can tell they're different people because they write differently.

"The questioner" never capitalises the start of sentences.

Stephen74's posts don't directly address the content of the article, but more the general theme and feeling of it.

"sealous" has strange line breaks in the middle of sentences and has about one paragraph per post.

"unamusementpark" (aka Unamused) who wrote the flyer and the website this article mentions, writes well and with perfect formatting, but can't resist adding pictures of kittens (or gratuitous french girls or slutty fairies).

And I write lots of long comments directly addressing parts of the article or other comments, but censoring the article's swearing. And I use paragraph breaks and capitals.

David Hollister writes a lot like me, but with lots of precise numbers and dates, rather than my tendency to only remember the general trend of the figures and forget the figures themselves.

"Pithy Name" calls everyone trolls and sockpuppets (incorrectly) to avoid addressing their irrefutable arguments, but knows how to use capitals, unlike danceofdays and jamaican-suppremecist.

"danceofdays" ignored the whole racism angle unlike everyone else.

And lastly, "jamaican-suppremecist" actually addressed our comments (but badly and with no capitals) unlike everyone else, and attacked both sides.

So they are clearly all different people.

Hey Pat, here's some quasi-intellectualism for you.

In 2010 blacks made up 13.6% of the US population per the 2010 census. Their total numbers were 42,020,743 (including mixed) per the same census. According to the 2010 FBI UCR blacks accounted for 53% of known homicide offenders, or 5,770 of the 10,870 known. Taking all the numbers we've just learned we can conclude that the murder rate per 100,000 people of the black community in the united states is 13.73.

On the other hand in 2010 whites (including hispanics) made up 75.1% of the US population per the same census. Their total numbers were 223,553,265 per the same census. According to the same UCR whites (including hispanic) accounted for 44.6% of the known homicide offenders, or 4,849 of the 10,870 known. When we take these numbers into account we can conclude that the murder rate per 100,000 people of the white (including hispanic) community is 2.16.

Thus it is ultimately concluded that blacks are 6.35x more likely to commit murder than whites (including hispanic). How's that for quasi-intellectualism?

"We've come a long way, but Jesus Christ, man, right here in Seattle, three hours ago, we found out there's still some wacky s*** going on."

You have come a very long way. The president of your white Western country is now a half-Kenyan from Indonesia. The immigration system is now dedicated to supporting non-white invaders, and reducing US Americans to a minority in their own country. And every educational, media, corporate or government institution has uplifting black people and suppressing white people as their primary goal.

But don't forget how you came so far. It wasn't by fixing any of the problems with black people or Mexicans or creating any peace and racial harmony. You succeeded only through violence, intimidation, silencing your critics, and taking over the system.

So it shouldn't suprise you that the statistics about black crime (and other disfunction) are still there, and a few brave intelligent people risk their safety and careers to get the truth out.

The only ways you can stop race realist "wacky s***" from "going on" forever are to actually stop black people from committing so much more crime, to stop black people from performing one standard deviation worse on all academic assesments, to stop black people from being hired and promoted ahead of more qualified people, to stop black people from abusing the welfare system, to stop black people from attacking white people, etc.

"in the sense that my book has no agenda"
Your book has a very obvious agenda of promoting and celebrating black violence and threats of violence against the white society that uplifts and supports them.

"There's a book called The Shadow of the Panther by Hugh Pearson. He's black. I don't know him, but it's obvious from reading his book that he decided the Black Panthers were bad guys and he was going to write a detailed but very biased history."

The Black Panthers were bad guys, and it's impossible not to notice that when you're writing a detailed history of them. In general detailed histories are more informative and accurate than informal chats with your friends about their music while ignoring the events. And Black people can get away with telling the truth about Black people, but white people are forced to tell politically correct lies.

"That's because white privilege is genetic."

So true.

You know, I think the reason why the disingenuous white liberals (DWLs) aren't out in force this time is because they've realized they have no counterarguments. Nothing, literally nothing against our facts and reasoning. I expect they're more than a little embarrassed by the constant shrieking about "trolls" and "white supremacists" and have started to realize the wisdom of that old saying: "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

Meanwhile, blacks are still more criminal than whites, and no one has even attempted to refute this simple fact.

"i like how all the commenters, the writer and subject of this article totally skirted around white privilege."

That's because white privilege is genetic. The genes for planning ahead, self-control, saving for the winter, looking after your children, monogamy, and building things, only evolved in harsh winter climates where they were needed. Those genes are what make white people (and North East Asians) successful. White people would like to share that privilege with other races, but they can't do that until they perfect genetic engineering. All their attempts to share the privilege some other way have failed spectacularly.

"yeah, no black people give a f*** about our history because we don't have 10 grand to blow on records."

No, black people usually don't care about their history, because: 1. Their history is embarassingly bad, destructive, and full of violent thugs (such as the Black Power movement). 2. They rarely care about studying and learning anything. 3. They have high present-time orientation. 4. They don't feel white guilt or the need to demonstrate their moral superiority like white people do.

The reason they don't usually have $10,000 to spend on research is because without the white privilige of useful genes, they have few marketable skills to make money from, and often no financial sense to spend money wisely or save it.

If you're a Jamaican Supremacist, how do you explain that most people (including you) don't want to live around Jamaicans or in Jamaica? And why Jamaicans are so unsuccessful compared to other races?

"'February is Black History Month, why do they need that?'"... obviously they only need it because black people's achievements in actual history are so hard to find, that black history would otherwise never get noticed.

"Then sarcastically saying, 'Well, they picked the shortest month, so obviously that's all they're worthy of.'"

If you actually read the article Thomas is referring to (http://unamusementpark.com/2012/02/black…) you will notice that while it is heavy on sarcastic humor, it as actually a very long and detailed look at why black people have a lot less than a month of history worthy of celebrating. And how most of that history is made up.

And one of the commenters there pointed out that the more successful of their celebrated "heroes", like Dr. Daniel Hale Williams and Dr. Charles Drew, are as white as snow (do a Google image search).

The article also has cute kittens.

"What's interesting about it is it's not vehement hate,"... I wish I could return the compliment, but the black power movement, and anti-racism activists, are all about vehement hate, violence, and censorship.

"It's couched in this quasi-intellectual thing,"... there's nothing "quasi-" about it. They have intellectual arguments, you do not. Compare their commenters with yours and the difference is very clear.

"like whites are superior to blacks"... In terms of crime, on average they are. That's an objective statistical fact. In terms of academic performance, they are too. That's another objective statistical fact. Both those undeniable facts are extremely relevent to social policy.

Black people are superior in terms of running fast, and resistance to osteoporosis, skin cancer, and malaria. Unfortunately their superorities aren't relevant outside Africa.

"it's been proven by science."... It has been. The crime leaflet was actually proven by statistics, but there is also proof of it through science. Science shows crime tendencies are largely genetic. And that black people and white people come from different gene pools that evolved seperately for tens of thousands of years to suit different environments.

'The Black Power movement lost steam in the mid 1970s, Thomas says, largely due to J. Edgar Hoover's COINTELPRO: "Basically a counterintelligence program against radical movements. You gotta remember, the FBI hates commies. Hoover was convinced that not only the Black Panthers but Martin Luther King Jr. were getting money from the Soviet Union and Red China."'

No, Black Power is stronger than ever. These days armed Black Panthers stand outside polling booths to intimidate white voters with the full support of the "Justice" Department and Eric "My People" Holder.

The FBI may have hated commies then (don't forget the context, those were the days where we came very close to nuclear apocalypse from them). But there has been a complete 180 since then. The old guard have all been replaced by hippy liberal activists at all levels of state, educational, and media power. Now they keep the record of Martin Luther King sealed so the embarassing truth will never see the light of day.

Hoover's theory was plausible. But the only part I can prove is that the Black Panthers were selling Mao Tse Tung's Little Red Book to gullible white liberals as a fundraiser.

Lol, what? We've had "White Guilt" shoved down our throats for years and they're still teaching it to innocent children in schools. Sad.

What did 'I' do? Do I keep black man down? Do I oppress Jews or Hispanics? No! Please leave me alone and stop accusing all White people of racism all the time.

My father didn't do anything, my grandfather didn't do anything and my great-grandfather never even saw a black person until he came to the US in 1905. So what does my family have to do with slavery and oppression yet I'm still somehow accused of it every day by the media, or by the professors in my university and even by our government now.

Please leave me alone and stop shoving lies down my throat and false accusation against my peers and I.

@2 - He's directly mentioned and quoted in the article. You can't get more on-topic and less trolling than that! That's like if Pat Thomas came here and posted a comment and you told him to troll somewhere else.

"(Groth wanted the book to be called Wake Up, N******, ... but Thomas ... convinced him to go with a less inflammatory title [Wake Up Whitey].)"

How is that a less inflamatory title?? Black people commit hate crimes at a much higher rate than white people do (just like they do with every other crime). And racial slurs like that against white people are the cause of events like "Beat Whitey Night" in Iowa http://www.google.com/search?q=beat+whit…

"Racism notwithstanding, Listen, Whitey! is garnering serious media attention..."
Can you honestly not see the absurd hypocrisy in the start of that sentence?

What's really interesting is that Thomas seems to have noticed that we're not actually racists; that we have excellent factual and logical reasons for believing everything we believe. Unfortunately, he starts from obviously false assumptions (like "white people are not, in fact, superior to blacks"), so he finds "contradictions" (with reality). Thus he is unable to fully wrap his head around the idea that the "racists" might be completely right. About everything. Hence the term "quasi-intellectual" and a sarcastic science. (Did you even try to understand my website?)

Thomas should know that we have indeed "come a long way" — a long way toward marginalizing, denigrating and destroying the white majority of this country, the very people who keep it functioning like a first-world civilized society, not a black or brown third-world hellhole. We've come so far now that the inevitable backlash by whites is bound to be spectacular. No, this doesn't end in flyers.

"Wacky shit," indeed.
