9 from L.A.: This winter, it's L.A. in Seattle at the Wright Space. Virginia Wright, in conjunction with the Getty Conservation Institute, has brought together works from her collections, Seattle Art Museum's, and loans that include works by postwar L.A. artists including Larry Bell, Ed Ruscha, Robert Irwin, John McCracken, Peter Alexander, and De Wain Valentine. Highlighted is Valentine's Gray Column, which is exactly what it claims to be: 12 feet tall and 8 feet wide of grey polyester resin. It's like the monolith from 2001, but a bit more squarish and tapered at the top. We, the audience, will play the part of the apes, as we gather around it to receive its eternal, cosmic, Seattle-colored wisdom.
