Zig Zag Cafe (Downtown)

1501 Western Ave
Seattle, WA 98101
(206) 625-1146
Website

The Zig Zag, tucked away on the stairs below Pike Place Market, serves very fine cocktails. The atmosphere is nice but not at all stuffy, with favorable lighting conditions. This is where Murray Stenson, the bartenders' bartender, a.k.a. Murr the Blur, used to do his alchemy—those behind the bar here have been trained well.

Miss You Murray

Wow! Now that I know where your spoiling people with love and the best "spirits" I will pay a visit. You taught so much to me while working together at "The Lakeside". Miss those cool always breaking etched wine glasses! I had the wine key you gave me before moving to Hawaii for many years. I always thought of you and your gentle gait with speed of sheer excellence in servie. Hope to come in on my Birthday August 20th.

HORRIBLE

It’s a shame – I read all these rave reviews about the Zig Zag café, great drinks, great food – great atmosphere and I got nothing. What am I doing wrong?? The atmosphere was busy, loud and the service was absolutely repugnant. My friend chose this spot for his wife’s (my best friend) 40th surprise birthday party as they’re known for phenomenal drinks. We waited some time before getting a table and when I got in, I was not only accused of cutting in line, but was literally berated for having the audacity to sit at a dirty table. This little man must have seen my confusion and annoyance with his tone, because he then said to me “Oh Really, is this the way it’s going to be tonight?!” I was absolutely shocked… I had to take a deep breath, so I went outside – my husband came to find me – and as I was telling him how rude this man was to me – there he was and he came at me again saying how he didn’t appreciate my dirty looks and that he didn’t need me coming into his establishment with attitude. Mind you readers, I had no attitude, I was trying to get a seat before my friends party was ruined. This went on with him chastising me in the middle of the bar, and me continually asking him why he was so mean. When I finally lost my temper – he got chest to chest with me – said he was the owner, and when I asked him to step back, he refused and said I was in HIS face, then I was expelled from the bar.

I found out later that this little man was indeed the owner, and had taken the time to not only explain himself to the party but apologize for HIS behavior. He also took my friends husband aside and asked him to apologize to me for being so short. He not only acknowledged his being short, but said that he escalated the situation because he was frustrated with the happy hour as it was “so busy”. Evidently I’m welcome back anytime. What?! I can’t help but think this was done only because he was worried about his tip from the rest of the birthday party. This was the most humiliating and upsetting outing I had ever had – and ultimately I missed my best friend’s party. I can tell you I never realized you couldn’t call out bad service without being verbally abused and humiliated by the staff and in this case the owner. I wouldn’t go unless you want to leave in tears.

take care of my heart

I am biased because I do this for a living, but this is my favorite bar ever. The drinks are not as "out there" as reviewed, many are classics, forgotten and dusted off, or the unknown variations of drinks you know well. The drinks are also cheap, $8 on the list half off for happy hour. The beers are Maritime and the wine list can match anything. Not however for casual drinkers, the bartenders here (Ben, Kacy and Murray) are great in everyway a bartender should be. As for drinks, all you need do is explain you preference and you'll get a drink that will astound you. Any bartender worth a damn can do that for you. The menu is small and simple, fresh and changed frequently. The focus here is the drink, but the menu supports a nice small meal or sharing food with friends. You'll find the booze that you'll never see anywhere else, the drinks that have not been made for 70 years, the library of cocktail books. But for me the real magic is really about the balance of the place . The Zig Zag is the class and casual, insider and tourist, world famous and impossible to find and skill without pretense. They are professionals in ways that goes past making drink. If you are on a date, they treat you as a sultan, if you are down and out they have the advice you need and if you need a drink nobody does it better.

Best Bar..........period?

So, you are looking for something new. You're thinking, 'Gee, I sure would like to go somewhere that has something other than the normal bar options...' Well, next time you think this, hopefully you'll think of Zig Zag. If you're reading this, then probably you already know about Murry and Ben and Casey, who each are some of the best bartenders anywhere - Murry himself was at the top of the list for one of the Best Bartenders in America by Esquire magazine(if my memory serves me well). Seriously, you can do no better. Other bars may have special ice or foam or something interesting like that, but that anyone would consider another bar better than Zig Zag? Oh, that'd be just a plain embarrassing thing to say.
