Single-Family Homeowners Are Walling Off the Puget Sound Shoreline: They're doing this to try and block Puget Sound from eroding their beaches, but salmon and orcas suffer for it, KUOW reports. Natural shorelines allow insects like sand fleas to prosper, which feeds salmon and other fish. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife estimates that single-family homeowners "have done 68 percent of the armoring around Puget Sound since 2005."

Washington Has One of the Most Unfair Tax Systems in the Country: Just look at the rankings over at the Seattle Times. When it comes to the regressive sales tax, Washington has more in common with Texas and Florida than it does with Oregon and New York. Both Texas and Florida rely on the sales tax to pay for their states' needs, while Oregon and New York thrive on an income tax. Washington is the fifth most regressive tax system in the country.

Uber Tests a New Driver Appeals Process in Seattle: One of the biggest grievances that led Seattle's Uber drivers to organize and fight for collective bargaining rights was the platform's ability to deactivate drivers without explanation. More than one driver thought that deactivation was used to punish them for speaking out about Uber in public. Now, Uber's testing a driver appeals process that will allow a panel of drivers to hear the deactivated drivers' cases.

Two Tacoma Elementary Schools Switch to Bottled Water: A 2015 report found "higher than acceptable" levels of lead at two Tacoma elementary schools, but apparently the results of the report weren't reviewed until this year after high lead levels were discovered at several Tacoma homes. It's unclear why the district never shared the 2015 results with parents, but now two Tacoma elementary schools have blocked off school drinking fountains and are supplying students with bottled water instead.

Meanwhile, Seattle Testing Turns Up No Lead: Regulators can breathe a sigh of relief after testing at a small sample of five Seattle homes didn't reveal any lead contamination. If you still want to have your home's water quality tested, it'll cost you. The Department of Ecology has a list of labs that do water quality testing for $25 to $50 a pop.
