University of Washington Students Stage Walk-Out, Call for Divestment from Prison Labor: Hundreds of students walked out of classes and marched through campus on Thursday, the Seattle Times reports. They want the UW to divest its endowment from companies that utilize prison labor, but the UW says it has no direct investments of that kind and doesn't know how much its associated hedge funds may have invested in such firms. KUOW summed up the protest this way: "UW students and staff say university is all talk, no action on racial equity."

King County Sheriff to Lose Helicopter Unit: Sheriff John Urquhart says budget cuts mean he ground the county's air unit, made up of two helicopters, and the marine unit. "The two units will be cut January first because I have no choice," Urquhart told KOMO.

Local Pharmacies Now Carry Over-the-Counter Naloxone Spray: The drug that Seattle police have used to save several people from heroin overdose is now available at Kelley-Ross Pharmacy Group. “If somebody is concerned that someone is at risk of an overdose, they can walk into a pharmacy and get these kits," CEO Ryan Oftebro told KING 5. Former City Council Member Sally Clark Hit a Cyclist, Costs the City $400,000: Clark failed to yield and struck a cyclist in Tacoma in 2012, permanently injuring his leg and preventing him from working. The city is paying out $400,000 in a settlement, the Seattle Times reports.

Washington Teachers Union Challenging Charter School Law in Court: Remember when Democrats allowed a bill reestablishing charter schools to come to the floor for a vote, even though the Supreme Court outlawed charter schools last year and the state is criminally underfunding its public schools? Remember when Governor Inslee failed to veto it? Unsurprisingly, the Washington Education Association is suing to overturn the law, KING 5 reports. The argument is the essentially the same: "The Charter School law has an unelected charter school board which controls public money."

Big Climate Justice Protests Planned for Anacortes: "Hundreds of activists are gathering in Anacortes this weekend for protests aimed at keeping fossil fuels in the ground," KPLU reports. Activists say they plan to disrupt the functioning of oil refineries in the area and civil disobedience actions could get underway today.

Plenty of Weed in Washington State: The state's market requires about two million square feet of marijuana crop, KPLU reports. "Currently, more than 12 million square feet are approved for production."
