DJ Riz, juggling fire on the decks.
DJ Riz, juggling fire on the decks. Kate Coffee

On May 6 at Re-bar, DJ Riz did a four-hour set at Dave Pezzner's new dance-music night, EPIC, which devotes its entire duration to one DJ in order to allow him/her to stretch out and cover more ground than DJs typically do at club gigs. Thankfully, Pezzner recorded it and now you can experience the eclectic greatness of one of Seattle's most beloved disc jockeys in the discomfort of your own cubicle. Despite Riz being a program host on KEXP/KCMU since 1989 and a fixture on Seattle's club scene for decades, there's little online documentation of his sets. This one goes a small way toward remedying that dearth. After the jump, Riz comments on his EPIC performance, which Pezzner says "starts off very slow and lives in the RnB and classic soul range for a good hour and a half before moving on to disco and house territory."

I haven't listened to the whole thing... just maybe half. It wasn't a flawless mix, by any stretch. I would've been comfortable with six hours instead of four. I'm hearing all sorts of stuff I wish I would've played, but it was all spontaneous, nothing pre-planned. And most of the hiccups were due to people touching me while I was mixing. I can hear every fist bump, handshake, selfie, nod, and hug. Kudos to Anton Bomb for interrupting someone who was trying to have a full conversation with me while I was approaching my cruising altitude. I appreciate the respect and the love, but you know... DJing can be like juggling fire, and I almost dropped balls a few times. Not my best work, but dag... it was fun.

The next EPIC features rave legend Robbie Hardkiss, June 3 at Re-bar.
