Former SeaTac City Manager Wanted to Create a "Tactical Map" of the City's Muslims: Donny Payne, a military vet and former Seattle police officer with no prior governing experience, resigned on April 6 after asking city staff to map the city's Muslim residents. An investigation into the matter concluded that Payne's "concerns about Muslims committing acts of terrorism seem to be the main motivation for his GIS mapping request."

Here's What Payne Had to Say About It: "I was trying to provide good governance to a diverse population,” Payne said. “And this is what is so outrageous to me: Because it was a white male asking for this information, suddenly people jumped to the conclusion that I must be out to get certain people. I’m deeply offended by that."

Um. How Did This Guy Even Get That Job? SeaTac's new mayor, Rick Forschler, asked him to apply. Forschler, along with three other SeaTac City Council members, had been elected together in a conservative sweep that ousted several incumbent council members who helped establish the city's $15 minimum wage.

Fun Fact About SeaTac's Mayor: He once invited state representative Matt Shea (R-Spokane Valley) to make a presentation at SeaTac on why the City Council should reject a $300,000 federal grant to build a park for poor people. Shea, a lawyer who once said that "there is no difference between Planned Parenthood and what Dr. Josef Mengele did in Germany in the 1940's," also lent his support to the Bundy occupation of the Malheur Wildlife Refuge.

The Seattle School District Won't Really Fund Rainier Beach High's International Baccalaureate Program: "Seattle is the only large district in the Pacific Northwest that offers IB but does not pay for it from district funds," Claudia Rowe reports. "Rather, the district provides startup money and then asks individual schools to foot the bill out of their regular budgets."

Seattle Times Editorial Defends Single-Occupancy Driving from Seattle's Dastardly War on Cars: "Mayor Ed Murray’s new growth plan is a shock-and-awe campaign targeting anyone who dares to drive in, through or around Seattle," Brier Dudley writes. He doesn't like that street performance under Murray's plan will be measured by use of single-occupancy vehicles rather than congestion.

Aerospace Entrepreneur Peter Zieve Apologizes About Sending Mosque Postcards to Mukilteo Residents: Zieve, the president of a major supplier to Airbus and Boeing, had created a local "mosque watch group" to monitor local plans to build a new mosque. Later, he sent anonymous postcards to residents warning them that a mosque was to be built and encouraged people to e-mail "mukilteostaysafe@gmail.com." “I sincerely apologize for those actions, in particular to my Muslim neighbors," Zieve said in a statement last week after meeting local Muslim families. "They can be assured that I will make no further efforts to oppose construction of the proposed mosque.”
