The Anti-Gay Shooter May Have Actually Been Gay: More proof that self-hatred and our culture of violent homophobia are a volatile combination. The killer's ex-wife, whom he reportedly abused, and a former friend claim that he was gay. Another man claimed to have talked to the shooter over gay dating app Jack'd on and off. According to Gawker, the shooter was "a regular at Pulse, the Orlando nightclub he attacked Sunday, patrons say—as often as twice a month. While he was there, he spoke of a wife and children and would often get so drunk he had to be escorted out of the club." Chris Callen, a performer at Pulse, told the Canadian Press that the shooter had been coming to the club for at least three years.

A Vigil Was Held at the Historic Stonewall Inn: Christopher and Sydney were there.

After the Orlando Attack, Islamophobia Reared its Ugly Head in Washington: According to KUOW, a mosque in Redmond is amping up their security after a threat was reported to the local police department just hours after the shooting. "We call on America to unite and join hands together and defeat this evil of terrorism. We cannot let the terrorists win by dividing us," Mahmood Khadeer, president of the Muslim Association of Puget Sound, told KUOW.

Read These Powerful Words from Sonja Bashar: The Muslim and queer activist, who also spoke at the vigil at Cal Anderson Park on Sunday, wrote this for the South Seattle Emerald:

We are ready for those who choose to fight to bring us down. For those who are attempting to pass anti-LGBTQ bills. For those who choose to continually scapegoat Muslim-Americans as responsible for terrorism.

It is not simply that I exist, it is that we co-exist in a world that centers white-supremacy, dominating Christianity, and conservative narratives of violence that work to erase me. We are Muslim, we are queer, and we exist.

In Much Happier News, Nonbinary Is Now a Legal Gender! "In a historic move sure to challenge federal policy, an Oregon circuit court ruled on Friday [June 10] that a resident could legally change their gender to nonbinary," the Daily Dot reported. Portland, Ore. resident Jamie Shupe, who is a nonbinary Army vet, filed the petition to change their gender in April. Today, this ruling is thought to be the first of its kind. But there's already one legal challenge ahead: identity documents.

Shupe told the Daily Dot their "first goal is to tackle the Oregon DMV." But even if the state agrees to issuing a nonbinary driver's license, federal identity documents currently only allow for male or female gender markers.

In 2014, over 64,000 people signed a petition asking the White House to legally recognize nonbinary genders—but the petition was without success. However, according to the website Nonbinary.org, other countries already federally recognize genders other than male and female—including Australia, Denmark, Nepal, and New Zealand.

The Feds Are Very Protective of their Surveillance Cameras in Seattle: Remember those surveillance camera boxes that popped up along 23rd Avenue last year? According to the Seattle PI, the U.S. Justice Department has sued the City of Seattle to prevent Seattle City Light from releasing documents revealing the location of the FBI's hidden cameras on city utility poles, among other data.

[U.S. Attorney Peter] Winn went on to describe a long-running effort by the FBI’s technical surveillance section meant to secretly record and track subjects identified by the FBI. Winn contended the FBI is permitted to install video cameras on power poles if doing so is “reasonably likely to achieve investigative objectives.”

Unlike more general surveillance efforts, the FBI usually uses surveillance cameras to pursue a particular person or group of people, Winn said. The cameras are installed close to locations where the subject is known to be.

“Disclosure of the location of an FBI surveillance camera nearly always can reasonably be expected to reveal the location of the subject of the investigation,” the federal prosecutor told the court.

The Central District's Crosswalks Are Getting a Makeover: Finally, some good news out of the 23rd Avenue construction headache and heartache. According to Capitol Hill Seattle, the Seattle Department of Transportation announced that 11 crosswalks in the CD will be painted the colors of the Pan-African flag. Most of them will be completed by July.

SDOT has announced the locations for seven of the remaining 10 crosswalks to be installed. In June, crosswalks are scheduled to be installed at the intersections of 23rd and E Jefferson St, 23rd and S Jackson St, MLK and E Alder St, 14th and E Yesler St, and 24th and E Cherry St. In July, crosswalks will be installed at the intersection of 20th and E Yesler St and 20th and S Jackson St.

The United Hood Movement first painted three crosswalks along Martin Luther King Jr. Way last summer in response to the area's rapid gentrification and Capitol Hill's rainbow crosswalks.

Proposed City Initiative Seeks to Protect Hotel Workers: Seattle's hotel workers, many of who are women, need our help. Initiative-124, which is sponsored by hospitality union Unite HERE Local 8, is currently collecting signatures to "strengthen protections against sexual harassment, guarantee access to health care plans that are affordable and functional, provide job security benefits if a hotel is sold or otherwise changes hands, and cap the number of rooms an attendant can be required to clean in a shift," Seattlish reported.

“No one should have to suffer harassment or risk her health and safety to provide for her family,” [Unite HERE's Abby] Lawlor explains. “Protection from sexual harassment and unsafe workloads and access to affordable health insurance and job security mean that these are jobs that women can maintain over time and use to build better lives.”

According to Puget Sound Sage, about 59 percent of hotel workers do not have health insurance. To be considered by the city council, I-124 needs 20,638 signatures by October.
