Then I said Sledgehammer? I hardly knew er! Hahahahahahahahaha. I love you, Sting.
"Then I said 'Sledgehammer'? I hardly knew 'er! Hahahahahahahahaha. I love you, Sting."

Tonight, at just about the moment Donald J. Trump is accepting the Republican nomination for the presidency, Sting and Peter Gabriel will be co-headlining at Key Arena. This is not the future we were led to expect, 2016. The double bill is part of the British rockers' Rock Paper Scissors arena tour, a smart scheme for two wizening ’80s superstars to combine their fanbases and play large US shows while charging exorbitant ticket prices. But what on earth will they play? Gabriel hasn’t released an album of original material in more than 13 years and I honestly have no idea what Sting’s been up to (playing the lute on Broadway, maybe?).

It’s easy to be suspicious of the motivation behind this endeavor, especially since both Gabriel and Sting spent many years as arena, even stadium headliners. But there’s actually kind of a lot of promise behind this mashup: Instead of each taking a solo set, reports show that Gabriel and Sting are performing collaboratively throughout the night, sharing their bands, trading off songs, and even taking lead vocal on certain picks from the other’s songbooks. While this will serve to annoy fans like me who love Gabriel but are generally angered by most of Sting’s solo stuff—and I’m sure there are fans that feel the exact opposite—this is actually a fairly ingenious way for two aging, artistically sated rock stars to reinvigorate their back catalogs. There is something to be said for the idea of Gabriel taking lead vocals on "Message in a Bottle." (Though I'm not necessarily running to hear Sting wailing on "Biko.")

Still, while tonight’s show could very well contain a few moments of inspiration, I’m really holding out hope for the behind-the-scenes documentary. By all accounts, Sting is a colossal prick, while Gabriel seems like a real head-in-the-clouds sweetheart. How will these two get along in the catering line? During sound check? Do they do yoga together in the morning? Who gets the bigger dressing room?
