The 3-D animated Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV, which opens today, doesn’t feel like an actual movie—more like an extended fantasy cutscene spinoff from the series of video games of the same name. Still, it’s the closest that Square, the gaming studio behind the film, has ever come to the real thing, and that’s to be applauded. Unlike 2001’s disaster Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, Kingsglaive’s photo-realistic high-tech magical world is stunningly beautiful to behold. The animation is top-notch. The hero, a warrior ninja in a hoodie (a ‘glaive) voiced by Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul, gets around with a throwing knife that lets him teleport from place to place. He fights off bad guys and monsters hidden inside ships while rescuing a princess. The script is laughably bad, the plot (two kingdoms fighting each other because something) is flimsy and contrived. But if you don’t take it too seriously, Kingsglaive a fun, gorgeous ride—plus, a useful entry point into the video games, which are usually pretty stellar.
