You weren't around then, Charles, but no one gave a damn about Nixon's knee. It was his 5 o'clock shadow and how it made him look shifty in the TV debates with JFK. Roger Ailes sorted that out for him in the 1968 campaign.
I'm glad that her campaign decided to conceal the fact she had pneumonia. That was some brilliant judgement on their part. And to be honest, this could cost her the election. Stumbling around after a 9-11 memorial event...that looks bad. Concealing a medical attention no matter how easily she should recover from it...all of it looks like she didn't learn anything from 2008 or the primary race she just finished up.
@1 & Charles...unlikely we can point to a single moment in any campaign; I think we tend to over-emphasize singular moments (like Dukakis in the Tank, though that was terrible).
But we also shouldn't under-emphasize them. They add to the mix.
& @2... "Conceal the fact?" As I recall, you don't like her to begin with, but...
The amount of transparency that some people want from our candidates has surpassed what is humanly feasible in our elections. And has likely crossed over into voyeurism rather than sound scrutiny.
@4, she was diagnosed on Friday they said nothing until after the footage of her stumbling around was going viral. So yeah...it's called concealing the fact. And since all the Hillary supporters up until this weekend were frothing at the teeth about Trumps doctored doctor notes.....
Good Afternoon Charles,
I agree with @1. I too, have read that it was Nixon's 5 o'clock shadow that doomed him in one of the debates with Kennedy on TV. JFK was tanned and handsome to begin with. He was made for the medium.
And, while I wish Ms. Clinton the best of health the video did her no service. Alas, her health condition IS no longer the stuff of conspiracies or obsession. I believe it has nothing to do with primatology.
@5 Not saying she had walking pneumonia is not a concealment.
I drove halfway across the country with pneumonia, and just thought it was a bad cold. Then I got some drugs and finished the drive, sleeping in my car at night.
That Hillary had pneumonia isn't news unless she dies from it. Personally, I don't care unless she's completely incapicated. Can we move on?
Hence Trump putting so much effort into his charging displays. The man is a walking PSA for skin cancer, high blood pressure, sleep deprivation, and heart disease. His hair alone is a medical emergency.
The sad fact is, they're both medically flawed candidates: old (Trump is fucking 70, older than Reagan was, HRC will be 69 2 weeks before election day) & fat (both probably 20 - 25% overweight). If Trump weighs less than 250 I'd be stunned.
@10 Because it was a 9/11 ceremony she could not miss (imagine the uproar if she hadn't even shown up), because it was warm and she was wearing layers (possibly a bullet-proof vest underneath it all), because she (like many of us regular human beings might have) assumed she was a little more "fine" than she actually was and that there seemed to be no need to inform the volatile public that she had a common viral infection that was being treated and whose symptoms would likely disappear shortly (@9), because she's been upholding an incredibly strenuous schedule for months, if not years... I can think of a lot of pretty benign reasons both for having a dizzy spell and for not disclosing until necessary.
@5...OK. I don't consider you an honest interlocutor. The idea that Clinton needs to reveal every detail to you is simply a notion I don't ascribe to. And I doubt you really do either; this was just another moment to ding her.
& re: trump? The medical records he has released are a joke, and nothing like the medical records HRC has released. But then again, I don't buy that you actually care to have a logical discussion about this.
@18 Allow me to correct something. If we take her campaign at their word, Pneumonia is not "lightly ill." It's a rather serious illness for older folks and is in the top 20 of death causes.
@20: "It's a rather serious illness for older folks and is in the top 20 of death causes."
That's also true of influenza. (In fact, the CDC lumps influenza and pneumonia together for some morbidity data.)
Should we freak out about the health of a candidate who catches the flu?
@24 I honestly don't care. This story is, to me, just above whatever news is coming out about the latest Star Wars or whatever. I said as much in my first comment. Unless she's in a coma...
But, GermanSausage told a lie in his second paragraph saying Hillary was "lightly ill" with pneumonia. Pneumonia is not "lightly ill." Neither is the flu.
Fainting and being helped into a van actually makes this count as a news story to most people (the coughing stories not as much). And, I might bet that most people kind of want to know if their rather older president or presidential candidate had a sometimes fatal illness.
@28: GermanSausage is not actually wrong. For someone in generally good health, the mortality rate of pneumonia is very low.
But, like every other wingnut, you won't admit when people you dislike are actually correct on an issue.
Also, goddamit, stop putting your fucking insecurities on me. You really like projecting your flaws onto people you disagree with, and you've done this three times now. GermanSausage refused to agree that pneumonia is a serious illness (it is for the elderly) because he dislikes Idiot Sawant. And you're disagreeing with me because you dislike me for calling you a hypocrite.
This is her Dukakis in the tank moment.
But we also shouldn't under-emphasize them. They add to the mix.

Where DID that outrage go anyway?

@9: I believe you're lying.
& re: trump? The medical records he has released are a joke, and nothing like the medical records HRC has released. But then again, I don't buy that you actually care to have a logical discussion about this.
Why do I believe Hillary Clinton to be pathological liar? Allow me to introduce Exhibit A: Hillary Clinton.
There's no need to make up lies.
"It's the heat."
"It's a conspiracy theory."
"It's pneumonia."
That's also true of influenza. (In fact, the CDC lumps influenza and pneumonia together for some morbidity data.)
