American crosswalks are insanely dangerous. Who the hell thinks it's a good idea to let drivers turn right on a red light, while pedestrians think they have some inalienable right to walk there because they have a green light? Traffic light design needs a major redo.
Regarding the "Dangerous Crosswalk Kills Pedestrian in Burien", a few things:
1) This didn't happen in Burien. It happened in Tukwila, just north of the Southcetner mall near the intersection of Macadam Rs S & Southcenter Blvd. The headline of the KOMO story even points this out.
2) Of course the driver that killed a lady should be more careful; that goes without saying. The story here is lazy/cheap urban planning. Take a look at the crosswalk where this …. It crosses a highway on-ramp to give pedestrians walking access east-west along Southcenter Blvd. In a world where cars and people need to coexist, it's probably not a good idea to line pedestrians up, shooting-gallery style, to trot across a highway on-ramp. Without redesigning the road, a pedestrian overpass seems like the best way to address this, which is what the interviewee was suggesting. Don't be a hater, be a problem solver.
@4 -- Good point. This does not look like a place where that sort of crossing makes sense. In contrast, look at this, on Lake City Way. Same type of crosswalk, with roughly the same number of lanes, but a world of difference on the ground. While those approaching the intersection might be going too fast (especially if heading south) it is obvious that this is a pedestrian area. There are traffic lights everywhere, and drivers know it. This sort of crossing actually makes sense.
In contrast, that Burien spot is full of cars going very fast. Of course it is. You have a freeway nearby, and a lot of the people are headed to the freeway (possibly include the idiot who drove into the victim). In contrast with the Lake City example, my guess is there aren't that many pedestrians there, either. A sidewalk like that is just asking for trouble. There should be a walk signal there (press a button and wait).
@4: That's a horrible place for a crosswalk indeed - as cars thinking they're on an long on-ramp to zoom up into Interstate 5. It should be removed immediately before the next tragedy.
It has to worry ordinary Trump supporters that he can be manipulated by whatever alternative facts somebody feeds to him. What if some mole feeds him Democrat facts?
Also, since we are talking about crime stats and no one even bothered to post any factual data, here are the crime stats for Sweden as collected by their justice department. The long term trend (10+ years) is not pretty no matter how you look at it, but in the very short term (1 year), most types of crime has decreased by a very small amount.

Please don't let Charles do the Morning News. Please.
