It was in my copy of the Washington Post yesterday, with a ton of comments. And a follow-up story this morning about the grief of the father and interviews with the other two victims - all on the front "page" (though you need to scroll down) under "More Top Stories." And it's the lead cover story of the Kansas City Star both days.

@9, murder is only bad if a black person dies with a white person pulling the trigger. If Charles was consistent he'd be screaming up a storm about south Chicago on a daily basis.

@10: all murders are bad. the one is George was horrific as well. there is a difference in the 2, however:
George: victim knew attackers, targeted because of an argument. ethnicity MAY have played a part, but also anger, drugs, testosterone, poverty, illegal immigration. not necessarily a hate crime.
Olathe: victims did not know attackers, targeted because of ethnicity. hate crime. the mitigating factor will be mental illness if anything.

Racism is America's original sin.

It does exist just about everywhere. I've seen in in Eastern Europe, where the Roma are universal targets, and ethic rivalries such as Turk vs Bulgarian, Romanian vs Hungarian and (particularly confusing) Serb vs Croat exist at the local level. I've seen it in the Philippines, which became infected with hatred against Black people during the American colonial experience. I've seen it in East Africa, where Dinka and Nuer hate one another with murderous intensity.

In all cases, it can be traced back to the strategy of divide and rule. In America, this strategy was implemented by the British following Bacon's Rebellion. The French later adopted it to maintain control of Louisiana. All the colonial powers employed it after the Scramble for Africa, where it was particularly useful in allowing a small cadre of colonial governors and administrators to maintain control of vast populations.

The American government began it's use prior to independence. Thomas Jefferson wrote a justification for it in his book, Notes on Virginia, where he referred to it as a noble lie- he openly admitted the idea of Black people as inferior or dangerous was a falsehood, but one he felt was necessary, as the entire US economy relied on slavery and would have collapsed without it. After slavery ended, it continued to have utility as corporate interests began to replace mercantilism. Low wage workers had to be kept divided, lest they take a cue from the Paris Commune upon realizing they had superior numbers to the relatively tiny number of capitalists. The best way was to create a system where even the lowliest white man had it better than the wealthiest Black, where men of every race had it better than women of any extraction, where christians were made superior to Jews and especially atheists, and where gay men were universally despised and hunted down like animals.

The more separations that appeared, the easier it became to subjugate the workers.

Thats as the appeal Trump made during his campaign- he appealed to white low income workers who had legitimate grievances against local free trade and recast their economic disenfranchisement as more a product of the dissolution of the old divisions. His argument was, do you remember how much better it used to be, and if so, the answer is to revert to those old conditions- including hardened racial and ethnic barriers, tariffs, gay (and now trans) witch hunts and women's subjugation.

The success of this argument is going to embolden white supremacists because it appeals to a vision of the past in which they predominated. It's also going to push marginal white supremacists, who may have harbored only passing thoughts of that nature previously. into a pattern of thinking that resembles what they believe successful people (such as Trump) share.

Its also going to deepen the effects in other parts of the world such as those I have described. Antagonisms between the Messariya and the Fur, Israelis and Palestinians, the Russian and the Turk, the French and the Arab, the Australian white and the Asian immigrant, will all deepen.

What we must attack is as always the root of the problem. Merely treating the symptoms-addressing this one man as an individual, for example- will do nothing to contain the growing evil. Our problem did not begin, nor will it end, with Trump. Our problem is the unnatural and artificial mindset imposed upon us by those who have sought to conquer by instilling these lines of division.

I've seen this reported in many places, but that may be because I have a lot of friends who care about things like this.

It will be interesting to see how this differs from something like the Treyvon murder, because in this case, the murdered person was a professional engineer working for a large corporation. It's not just about race, it's also about class.

This was on the front page on the New York Times (digital) and highlighted on facebook newsfeed, and high on the google top US stories.

70% of all interracial violence has a black perp. That stat comes from the DOJ under Eric Holder. It is just a coincidence that you only care when the crime is committed by whites. It doesn't say anything about you that you either ignore or are an apologist for the massive amount of interracial violence blacks commit which never is called a hate crime. It's just a coincidence that in your few columns on black violence you make it a pity party for the perps or at best show completely indifference to the suffering they cause. Look at your columns on the Charleston massacre vs. the Kosher Market attack in Paris. Did you notice how quick you were to mention that Charleston was white on black hate crime? Did you notice that you omitted that the Kosher attack was a black on Jewish hate crime? Did you notice that you seemed much more sympathetic to the victims in one case then the other? Black mobs targeted Asian owned businesses in Ferguson and Balitmore just like they did in the 90's. Not one word of condemnation or shame. It is amazing that blacks such as you and Charles Blow (you are kind of the local version) can see anti-black racism under every nook and cranny but never see the serious abuse you commit towards others. Never any compassion for the pain blacks cause others. I see this constantly with your writing. You are always trying to shame whites. You are always trying to shame any group for their racism against blacks. Never any shame for the wrongs of your own race.
Why should Trump condemn this? Did Obama condemn the murder of the Tuba Man? The murder of a rabbi in Florida by 2 blacks? The targeting of Asian owned businesses by black mobs in Ferguson and Baltimore? He spent a lot of time with Trayvon Martin's parents. He didn't spend any time with Daniel Adkins parents. You spent a lot of time bemoaning George Zimmerman. I don't remember you bemoaning Cordell Jude Lamar.
There has been an epidemic of murders and serious assaults against Asians in Seattle for years. You didn't care about it but now you care about this murder in another state. Why? The racial dynamics of those involved. If it were white rightwingers committing the assaults you would have pipped up a long time ago.
This hate crime happened 2 blocks from the Stranger's office. Your paper never reported it. The perp was wearing a hat with writing on it. If it had said "Make America Great Again" it would have been reported. How nice of you to call out the racial hypocrisy of white and Trump. No, she's just a crank with an agenda. Slog is not the crime watch. It doesn't have to report every crime that happens, even the stuff on Capitol Hill. It's advocacy journalism, and people need to get that through their thick skulls instead of attempting to be all high and mighty about it.

As I said above, I think what sets this murder apart is the class aspect. Yes, he was an immigrant worker, but he was also there representing a large corporation. Large corporations don't want to see their foreign workers - many of whom are here because we lack people with those skills - murdered in bars, even in flyover country.

While the left, including Muede loves to point out Republican racial hypocrisy they are oblivious of their own. According to the DOJ 69% of interracial violence is black on non-black. 2% is white on black. Blacks commit twice as many murders on whites then visa versa. 75% of people shot by police are not black. There are 5 times more hate crimes against Jews than Muslims.
Judging from the media, from the Stranger all the way to the The New York Times you would think 90% of violence in white on black, 8% white on Asians, Hispanic, Native American. You would think 99% of people shot by cops are black. You would think 99% of all religious based hate crimes were against Muslims with anti-Jewish violence being pretty much extinct.
People like Charles go a long way in helping this misperception along. If his motives were in the right place why would he ignore the epidemic of black on Asian violence right here in Seattle but instead focus on a single incident that was committed by a white person in another state? Why would he bemoan that George ZImmerman being on the loose in Florida made him and his family feel unsafe but not the mob who killed the Tuba Man being on the loose in this very city? It's called racism.
He also repeats mantras that contradict something called facts. In this piece he wails that the national media isn't covering this story. They are covering it intensely and were long before he posted this claim. Right now it's googles top world story. Whereas the fact that in Chicago a pregnant woman and 7 others were murdered in a 24 hour period is further down in the news. Why? In one case the perp was white and in the 7 others the perp was black. You think if whites shot 7 blacks in Chicago, including a pregnant woman, in a 24 hour period, it wouldn't be worldwide news? Chuck is concern trolling. He is doing what he always does: trying to point out racial hypocrisy and how racist whites are when all he's doing is pointing out his racial hypocrisy and what an anti-white racist he is. The only defense I can give for him is that this mindset seems the norm in the media and left in general.

When it reports on crime that is white on black or brown on the other side of the country while ignoring an epidemic of equally disturbing and violent crime with different racial dynamics right here in Seattle they deserve to be called out for it. When a Muslim in Massachusetts says they were called a terrorist and The Stranger reports it while failing to report on a gun related anti-Jewish hate crime 2 blocks from their office they deserve to be called out on it. Yes, that is racism.

Advocacy for whom? For those who are victimized by right white wingers while ignoring any violence and bigotry that has different racial or ideological dynamics? That's not advocacy that's agenda driven. And this crap has been going on far before Trump got elected so don't even try to blame that. Claiming that white racists, right wing Christians, and white cops are committing a holocaust against POC, Muslims and blacks by reporting obsessively on incidents anywhere on this planet that fit that dynamic while ignoring the massive amounts of equally disturbing violence that occur epidemically right under your nose due to the racial, religious or ideological background of the perp/victim is abhorrent. The only thing that makes people with this mindset less dangerous that Trump and his Cabinet is that they don't run the government.
