Dolezal's delusions neither picked my pocket nor broke my leg. By all accounts, she was good at leading the Spokane NAACP. She has kids, including one she rescued from her crazy religious asshole parents (the ones that ratted her out).
In an era when the worst person in the world has been made the most powerful person in the world, she's way down the list of people who deserve to suffer.
@charles - did you see the excellent Atlanta episode on race and gender? Modern day academic theory states both race and gender are social constructs, yet has two very different conditions around how we deconstruct and move between these social constructs.
@3 yeah that's interesting. I think the difference is basically empirical: it turns out that people fairly often say "people thought I was that gender, but I'm not" (like realizing this as four-year-olds), but people don't often have that for race. Race is probably just a special case of ingroup/outgroup labeling, and people don't generally get an ingrained sense of being outgroup.
Versus gender is a more fundamental thing (even if the roles attached are arbitrary), and also most people are raised in a non-segregated environment for gender.
I agree Dolezal seems like she's probably something of an idiot, perhaps a rather sizable one. But she doesn't deserve to be rendered unemployable. I'd look into changing my name and getting a nice haircut and maybe a pair of novelty glasses if I were her.
As for anti-Jewish vandalism and other hateful acts:
It should be noted that quite a few right-wing Israelis US Jews welcomed Trump Islamophobic remarks and actions.
Apparently Islamophobia is also anti-Semitism.
Your take on that Times editorial seems really disingenuous. It says: "Voters are capable of holding two ideas in their minds at once. Liberal bastions like Seattle should push back on Trump’s worst policies. But we also want good, competent local government." How is that "Ed board wants Inslee to stop fighting Trump"? I mean, you disagree that we can and need to do both things?
Mikey @ 14
Anti-Semitic sentiments are not limited to "anti-Jewish."
Those who embrace racial injustice to one ethnic group should be aware that injustice to one is likely to spread, especially to similar "others."
Hateful rhetoric is dangerous to all and should be considered as such, even if the Trump regime is allowing more settlements building in the West Bank (which is actually bad for Israel.)
@15, @16 The problem with your positions, of course, is that those you support are just as vulnerable to the same accusations of deserving the hate, whatever the source. The key is to lose the hate altogether.
My old granny, bless her heart, used to tell me; "never point your finger at others, because when you do there are three more pointing back". I suggest you both think on it.
the prestigious Travel Weekly magazine (as close to an “official” travel publication as they come) has set the decline in foreign tourism at 6.8%. And the fall-off is not limited to Muslim travelers, but also extends to all incoming foreign tourists. Apparently, an attack on one group of tourists is regarded as an assault on all.
[...] On the web, flight searches for trips heading to the U.S. out of all international locations was recently down by 17%.
A drop of that magnitude, if continued, would reduce the value of foreign travel within the U.S. by billions of dollars. And the number of jobs supported by foreign tourists and their expenditures in the United States—and thus lost—would easily exceed hundreds of thousands of workers in hotels, restaurants, transportation, stores, tour operations, travel agencies, and the like.
@16, anti-Semitic comments are never made to or about Arabs, even though they are technically Semites. Such comments exclusively refer to Jews. And you knew that, of course, but just had to get some West Bank comment in.
@17 Not logical at all. Whether or not some Palestinians are guilty of the same unfortunate behavior has no impact at all on whether said behavior should be condemned.
@25 Nope. MikeyC implied that one shouldn't point out said behavior among some Jews (his granny used to say "never point your finger at others") because some Palestinians were guilty of the same.
Sarah @ 91
“Anti-Semitic” had over the years become synonymous with “anti-Jewish.” It is also used cynically to diffuse any criticism of Israel, labeling as such all who say Jewish settlements in the West Bank are not only illegal, but also hurt Israeli society. You may recall a compromise-seeking PM assassinated some 20 years ago.
Obama was labeled “anti-Semitic” by some local and Israeli right-wingers, which is why PM Netanyahu assured us couple of weeks ago that “Trump is not anti-Semitic,” supposedly after assuming he now has a free hand to continue the mistreatment of millions of civilians.
Very sadly some local Jews and Israelis were eager to close an eye for Trump’s anti-Moslem comments and acts. And you know it.
Apparently we’re all in it together, which is what I meant all along.
Mikey- My criticism of some doesn’t mean I support the others.
Not sure why grandma is relevant here, maybe raindrop has some insight.
When you cite the First Amendment as a defense for what you say, you're admitting that the best justification you have for it is that it's not literally a crime to say it.
When people beg you to fuck off and die, when they beg admins to ban you, and the best justification for your spewage is "well you read it! You must have gotten something out of it!", well, what does that say about you? People *tried* to not see it, and most of them didn't, but a few accidentally read your piss-shit cocktail. And that's your reason for getting out of bed and going to work every day.
Hey fucknuts, see all those shitty ads on your screen? All those fucking home refinancing offers and dick pills and shitty shit that's so shitty you don't even fucking know what they're selling? THAT'S YOU. Screen garbage that everyone tries not to see, and tries to unsee if they did see it.
Oh, you WANT those fucking ads, don't you? You read them, so you must want them right? Right?
@35: You keep reading Slog. So do I. We both know what it's like. But it looks like you're a self-fulfilling prophecy. Every time you complain about a troll, either at me or generically, you create a comment that others empathize may with but otherwise contributes no value to the topic of the thread, or even to a forked discussion in the thread.
If your anger is not worthy of using the report abuse feature, then the webmaster is not going to "ban the troll" no matter how many times you make such comments.

... the man recently featured on Fox News as a "Swedish defense and national security advisor"
is: an immigrant convicted of violent assault, specifically the type to be deported.

Fuck the Seattle Times.
(She didn't hurt you and she's not a fraud. The NAACP can handle it. They will let you know if they need you to tell them they were wronged.)
