I think the difference is basically empirical: it turns out that people fairly often say "people thought I was that gender, but I'm not" (like realizing this as four-year-olds), but people don't often have that for race. Race is probably just a special case of ingroup/outgroup labeling, and people don't generally get an ingrained sense of being outgroup.

Versus gender is a more fundamental thing (even if the roles attached are arbitrary), and also most people are raised in a non-segregated environment for gender.

I agree Dolezal seems like she's probably something of an idiot, perhaps a rather sizable one. But she doesn't deserve to be rendered unemployable. I'd look into changing my name and getting a nice haircut and maybe a pair of novelty glasses if I were her.

You may recall a compromise-seeking PM assassinated some 20 years ago.
