An Arlington Bald Eagle Has Died From Lead Poisoning: On the penultimate day of a presidency that grows brighter by the minute, Obama placed a ban on "lead ammunition and fish tackle on national wildlife refuges." On the day Trump's interior secretary reversed this ban, a bald eagle, the animal that symbolizes American virility (it's the bear for the Russians), died from severe lead poisoning. It is believed that the Arlington bird ate the carcass of an animal killed by lead bullets. This apparently happens a lot in the sticks. Said a veterinarian, Lesanna Lahnerm, to KING 5: "It's a really good example of a one-health issue. It's bad for wildlife and it's bad for kids." What we are all thinking as we look at the pictures of the cold-dead Arlington bird—white head thrown back, black body bloated, yellow limbs stiff? What Trump's interior secretary is doing to our national wildlife refuges, Trump's new head of the EPA will do to our water and air. The death of this eagle is indeed a sign of our times.

The board also quotes Dinosaur Rossi about something or other. Making sense of his ideas is like making sense out of the flying chaos of a group of gnats. The noise being made about taxes represents what is called "rational irrationality." What this means is, yes, at the level of the individual, the taxes hurt and it is rational for you to want to avoid them. But at the level of society, it is rational to heavily tax cars and the fuel they use. You will always find the GOP on the side of the rational in policies that, on a macro-scale, are irrational.

Seattle Is The Only City in the US With Fast-Growing Transit Ridership: Just four other cities saw growth in transit ridership in 2016. One, San Francisco, had no growth to speak of. The rest experienced small to sharp declines. Even Portland went down by nearly 2 percent. Seattle rose by an impressive 4.1 percent. But as a whole, cars are still winning the war on public transportation. And with Trump in power, we can expect transit systems to suffer further declines.

Five Democratic State Senators Join GOP-Led Attack on Sound Transit: Seattle Transit Blog reports that five Dem senators who represent "parts of Renton, Tukwila, and Sodo" have decided to give 24 Republicans their vote on a bill that would establish an elected board to govern the tax-happy Sound Transit. We see, once again, that Republicans can be trusted to be Republicans, but Dems cannot be trusted to be Dems. Of course this "elected board" will not make the democratic institution more democratic. It will instead provide the haters of public transportation with the means to reverse the impressive gains that the institution has made.
