At around 5 a.m. on Friday, Temple de Hirsch Sinai in Capitol Hill was vandalized with anti-Semitic graffiti. A photo taken by KOMO shows that the message read: "HOLOCAU$T I$ FAKE HI$TORY." An off-duty Seattle Police officer discovered the message, contacted temple leaders, and documented the incident, the police department reports.

This is the third hateful incident committed against the Seattle area's Jewish community in the last two weeks. Three buildings in Ballard were vandalized with anti-Semitic graffiti on February 26. Then, on February 27, Mercer Island's Stroum Jewish Community Center reported a bomb threat, prompting police to evacuate 250 people from the premises. Since January, there have been 100 threats made against Jewish community centers and schools across the country, CNN reports.

The Capitol Hill Seattle blog reported that a nearby resident eventually taped up a bed sheet with the message "LOVE WINS" painted onto it over the hateful graffiti around 11:30 a.m.

Sean Whitcomb, public information officer for the Seattle Police Department, said Bias Crimes Detective Beth Waring is investigating the incident as a hate crime.

Around 1 p.m., SPD officers also investigated a suspicious package delivered to the temple, CHS reported. When called for comment, Whitcomb and SPD Detective Patrick Michaud said that the box was full of books and was part of a planned delivery.

"In today's day and age, I think everyone is operating on a high level awareness," said Whitcomb. "For the Jewish community right now, considering everything that's happening nationally and locally, [with] a donation like this, we would encourage people to [notify the temple] of donations ahead of time, be mindful, and to be good neighbors."
