Gary McDowell (second from left)
Stop the world: Gary McDowell (second from left) had to undergo emergency surgery Friday.

British post-punk group Modern English have had to cancel their North American tour—including a March 28 show at Neumos—due to a medical emergency suffered by guitarist Gary McDowell. He underwent emergency surgery for an unspecified ailment in LA on March 24 and will reportedly be out of commission for several days. The band's publicist says that "following surgery, [McDowell] was stable and will remain in the hospital for a few days to recuperate before flying back to the UK."

Supporting their better-than-expected new album, Take Me to the Trees, Modern English—who are best known in the US for their 1982 hit "I Melt with You"—plan to reschedule these cancelled gigs after McDowell recovers. Ticket-holders can receive refunds at points-of-purchase.
