Another Example of Football’s Toxic Culture: America’s obsession with football often comes at the expense of others. At Baylor University, the sport came at the expense of women who were sexually assaulted by players while the coach covered for them. At Penn State, football came at the expense of children raped by Jerry Sandusky. That’s not to mention the brains expended by the game.

Garfield High School’s obsession with pigskin came at the expense of Will Sanders, the Times reports. Garfield recruited Sanders, 19, from Texas last season. His grades didn’t pass the muster for eligibility, but still, Sanders was the third-rushing leader and the team had its best season in years. After that season, Garfield dropped Sanders from the student database. Now Garfield is under investigation for potential recruiting violations.

Why Were Police Called to the Mayor’s Home Last Summer? Here’s what we know about what happened at Mayor Ed Murray’s Home on June 24, 2016: We know that Mayor Ed Murray personally called police chief Kathleen O’Toole about an unknown person outside his home, which he shares with his husband, Michael Shiosaki. We also know that shortly after, Murray called O’Toole again and said that “Maggie,” presumably staffer Maggie Thompson, was at his home and that everything was all right. Finally, we know that police officers eventually fielded the call to the mayor's home.

Here’s where the stories diverge:

Delvonn Heckard, the man suing Mayor Ed Murray for child sexual abuse issued a subpoena yesterday including notes from an anonymous source that says the “unknown person” outside Murray’s door was a shirtless man whose wallet police had to retrieve from inside the home. Heckard’s attorneys also suggest that the mayor called O’Toole directly to obscure evidence that the incident took place, pointing to the fact neither the Seattle Police Department’s online 911 logs, nor the department’s police reports portal, show any trace of something happening at Ed Murray’s home that evening.

The mayor has a completely different story. His spokesman, Jeff Reading, and four other eye-witnesses, claim in a letter that the mayor hosted a gathering with friends and staffers on the evening in question to celebrate Pride Month. The letter claims that two people, “both wearing shirts,” knocked on the mayor’s door looking for a bathroom. The pair got “pushy,” but Murray’s group managed to direct them elsewhere without incident. Afterwards, the letter says, Murray reported the incident to O’Toole “out of an abundance of caution.”

UPDATE: KING 5 initially reported that police "locked" the incident report from the alleged disturbance, but later reported that no incident reports from the night in question exist.

King County Votes to Ban Police From Questioning Detained Youth Without a Lawyer Present: The county council voted unanimously to stop cops from interrogating juveniles held at the youth jail without the presence of counsel, a practice that advocates say greatly increases a child’s risk of self-incrimination and giving false confessions. “When a child is put in a County jail, it is the County’s duty to keep the child safe and look out for the child’s best interest,” said Councilmember and bill sponsor Dave Upthegrove.

Supporters of the policy stressed that 70 percent of juveniles held at the King County lockup are youth of color.

“I Used to Call it the Weekly Staff Beating", said one of the former staffers of state Rep. Jesse Young that has accused the lawmaker of regularly losing his shit. The News Tribune spoke with five employees that say Young, a Republican who represents Gig Harbor, is prone to fits of rage, berating legislative assistants, campaign staff and other state representatives. Most of the sources who spoke with the News Tribune no longer work for the representative. One staffer says Young regularly called her the c-word. Another says he was called stupid and told to shut his mouth after questioning the wisdom of Young's idea to construct a toll bridge out of Navy aircraft carriers.

The House administration in December sent Young a letter warning him to stop his behavior, barring him from working with one legislative assistant and getting rid of his district office for at least a year. The letter says Young could regain his privileges if he takes anger management courses. Young refuses, saying he does not demean his employees.

The State of Arkansas Executed Two Men in One Night: Jack Jones, 52, died by lethal injection shortly after 7 pm. His lawyers claimed that Jones remained conscious for a period before his death, “moving his lips and gulping for air.” More than three hours later, Marcel Williams, 46, died on the same gurney. An Associated Press reporter witnessed the executions.

It was the first time since 2000 that a state has executed two people on the same day. Jones and Williams’ death comes amid a mad dash by Arkansas to kill eight people before the state runs out of midazolam, an execution drug, on April 30. One of those men died last week. Another is scheduled to die on Thursday. Four others had their executions stayed.

A spokesman for Gov. Asa Hutchinson described last night’s executions as “flawless.”
