This is the headline on CBS News's website: "Trump slams 'political correctness,' London mayor in wake of attack." We can expect that other major news websites in the US will have similar sounding, and therefore very misleading, headlines for this story. Misleading because many who read these headlines will think Trump has a legitimate concern, that the mayor of London had made some mistake or was managing this emergency badly. But in fact nothing of the kind is at the bottom of Trump's criticism.

Trump's tweet: "At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is 'no reason to be alarmed!" Sadiq Khan's actual statement:

Londoners will see an increased police presence today and over the course of the next few days - no reason to be alarmed. One of the things police and all of us need to do is make sure we're as safe as we possibly can be.
Trump very well knows that the mayor is not talking about terrorists. He is talking about the police, whose presence will be increased over the next few days. So, if you see lots of cops around, do not immediately think something bad is going down and panic and make matters worse with the confusion panic always kicks up. This is the mayor's meaning.

And so a better and more truthful headline for Trump's tweet is this: "Donald Trump uses London terror attack to twist Sadiq Khan's words as he trolls capital's mayor." But the most accurate headline would be one that says: Khan attacked by Trump because he is a brown man and a Muslim. And those who do not make this as clear as possible are promoting and offering cover for our president's racism and Islamophobia.

Khan has done nothing wrong. He responded quickly to the emergency. He denounced that act of terror in the strongest terms. He also stated: "Just like terrorists are constantly evolving, finding new ways to disrupt us, harm us, attack us, the police and experts and all of us are finding new ways to keep us safe." What all of these facts connect is Trump's hate of Khan with his hate of Obama. The former is the leader of one of the capitals of the West (and he is not white), and the latter was the leader of a major Western power (and he is not white). Also, the former, like the latter, is popular and competent.

The Standard:

Mr Khan is also massively more trusted than either Mr Corbyn or Mrs May to keep the country safe from terrorism, found the poll of 1,000 Londoners. They said he is doing a good job at City Hall by a three-to-one majority — including a clear majority of Tory voters who have a view.

Trump's racist attack is even more brazen when you consider this: he hasn't made a single comment from his personal Twitter account about the two people stabbed to death in Portland, Oregon by a man threatening the lives of two teenagers (one a Muslim and the other black American). The suspect in that case, which involved a third person who was almost stabbed to death, is a known white supremacist. But because the color of Portland's villain does not confirm Trump's racism, he had to go all the way to the UK and get all in their business. The villains of the London Bridge attack are the right color and religion.

Lastly, rural people, we city people are the ones who get injured and killed by terrorists. Not you. And yet we still will not vote for your idiots or buy your bans and walls.
