The most heartbreaking stories after the election were on how to explain to children that Trump won--how people willingly voted for a hateful, selfish, greedy, lying, racist, misogynistic bully and a rapist who behaves in every way that we teach children is wrong and totally immoral.
He's shit on the face of everything that we claim to stand for as a society. Evil won. No one with a ounce of integrity, intelligence, kindness, or good faith could cast a ballot for Twitler, so why in the FSM's name would you want to be friends with them--they're just like him.
I was checking a few right wing sites to see what they're saying about the Comey hearing, and I came upon this article on the National Review site. It basically says the same thing Charles said here, but spins it out further to posit that we're heading not for a civil war but for a dissolution of the union.
" Donald Trump has become a river that's permanently separated the left from the right. This river can not be crossed."
The first rule of politics is that nothing is ever permanent. Not when Newt Gingrich declared a permanent Conservative majority in 1994 nor in 2008 when the Democrats supposedly took the WH "forever".
As someone with friends in different political worlds than my own, I disagree completely. Our current political climate definitely makes it harder to transcend politics in friendship, but it is still possible. AND IT SHOULD HAPPEN MORE. The major problem right now is the constant media and social media separation of ideologies into factions in complete opposition from one another. Politically, Liberals and Conservatives don't have a lot of overlap, but there is some. In terms of HUMANITY, we have everything in common; we want to live free, in a decent world, that has hope for our children. The truth is that most people are somewhere in the middle politically, but we've virtually stopped the dialogue to find those connections. It's easier to fling shit at each other from our own side of the river than it is to ford the river to truly understand what is on the other side.
I value my (admittedly few) conservative friends that are still willing to see past the tribal bullshit and care about me. We talk about politics. We disagree, heavily, sometimes. But if I didn't have that real person there to discuss things with, I'd probably think the same thing as Charles.
@10: And of course the bullshit idea that this post is founded on is that not only are there only two viewpoints, one can only inhabit one extreme or the other. You are either an enlightened liberal, or a racist, murderous conservative.
Basically, Charles falsely assumes that everyone is as shallow, one dimensional, and as isolated from humanity as he is.
Good Republicans are not going extinct, but they sure as hell won't feel welcome in a city where a councilwoman is cheered by a crowd for not having any Republican friends and articles like this are written. We can point to other factors causing a divide, but if you aren't part of the solution, maybe you should check yourself and ask if you're part of the problem.
"...the kind (of) political animal...".
You may want to fix that.

Is there a special kind of evil for Trump, or does the word, evil, just mean political opponent now?

It sure does feel like it's where things are headed.
