(Putting on flame suit) I'm a liberal and I'm honestly not trying to be a troll but why does this guy have to come here? How good is his English? Can he realistically get a job here without displacing an American? You can't solve everyone's problem - there are just too many people. There are a lot of well meaning refuges that discover the grass isn't always greener in a Western democracy and turn bitter ... and violent.

"Displacing an American".
That's always a good one...

Hey Dan, Thanks for this. I hope we can help him. However, if you put "mohammed from NYT article" in the email line it won't accept it. I did my best to indicate it in the "Name of Honoree" section. Any chance you can reach out to them to make a clear/easy way to directly support this man? THanks, Kathy

davidc, seriously?! why does he have to come here?! did you read the fucking article?! he can't fucking stay where he is, and why are we so goddamn special that the richest country in the world can't take some refugees?! you call yourself a liberal?! you're an ass. there are no refugees that have EVER - i'll say that again, there are no refugees that have EVER - committed a violent crime here. wow. you're a hideous excuse for a human being, i wish we could send YOU to the turkish refugee camps and take mohammed as a replacement. you are what is wrong with this country.

I thought it was going to be heartbreaking in the "was lined up with 100 other men and then they were all shot in the back of the head like cattle and their lifeless bodies dumped into the euphrates" heartbreaking, not like, successfully fled to a secular western ally state. That's damn near heartwarming.

@1 - Refugees don't run violent. Refugees remember th horrors they were escaping. The radicalization has come to their children whose most painful experiences aren't from those horrors but from being treated like violent monsters in the only country they remember. Maybe if we stopped treating all Muslims like shit....

I donated $25.00. I hope it helps Mohammed and I hope it helps others, too.

@1) - You say you're a liberal but your comment history says otherwise. Fuck off asshole (and you're not an ally).
9
I thought the SJW's on Slog keep telling us how wonderful Islam is towards gays?
10
@ 5 - The fact that Turkey can even be considered worthy of being an ally state is not heartwarming in the least.

They won't accept anything in the e-mail line as it's a forced format. Instead I listed "For the Emergency Shelter and Protection for LGBT Clients Program" in the 'in honour of' first name and last name so hopefully that works. I'm sure there are plenty of other people who are also in need and weren't featured in the NYT so I'll let them decide who needs the money the most (within that narrow program).

@David,

I could see an argument that we can't save the world and therefore should turn our backs to vulnerable people because otherwise we'd be overrun. I disagree with it for all sorts of reasons, but I can see it. However, in the cases of the majority of countries on this specific ban, the refugees are fleeing places that the US has been directly involved in destroying and failing to control for decades now. You can't both claim the right to interfere in governments around the world (in the case of Iraq, literally supporting dictators and playing both sides of a war and destroying economically- this all before W's invasion, then a decade and a half of attempted occupation) and then later turn your back and ask what obligation we have to help the people fleeing these conflicts.

The refugee crisis is, in large part, the chickens coming home to roost.

@9 (1) cite or you are full of horseshit
(2) gay conversion therapy is psychological torture.... perpetrated for years right here in the USA by mostly deeply Christian folk. But I thought you said only Muslims and mean to gay people.

We are better in this country toward gay people than many majority Muslim countries, in spite of (not because of) our Christian fundamentalists.

I started a monthly auto-donation to the International Refugee org Dan mentioned a few months ago - doesn't have to be a huge amount per month, depending on what you can afford (I'm doing $35 a month). It helps a lot, I'm told, and is painless + it feels good. If everybody did this, it would do world of good for these folks.
