So I live in Langley and the whole "lucky to be alive" thing is a bit over the top. The collision occurred in a 20 MPH zone by a 4-way stop intersection and the injuries were all minor in both vehicles. Still, it is lucky that this didn't happen on HWY 525 (a 55 MPH zone) where there are yearly fatalities involving drunk drivers. All of us on Whidbey, where Mr. Haggerty has family, are relieved that everyone involved survived relatively unscathed.
I've been involved in a low speed head-on as well. Both cars were totaled, and airbags are no fun even if they do save your life. I was pretty banged up and bruised, but yeah, hardly life threatening.
