A 7.1 earthquake has hit Mexico City on the anniversary of the 1985 Mexico City earthquake. Exactly 32 years ago (September 19, 1985), a 8.0 earthquake hit the city, killed around 5000 people, and damaged over 400 buildings. The earthquake that struck today was not as powerful but it appears to have caused a lot of damage. Several buildings have completely collapsed, and some of these buildings do not look old or dilapidated. So far, 42 people are reported dead.

Earlier this month, Mexico suffered its worst earthquake, in terms of power, in a century. It killed 58 people. Seattle is certainly thinking about Mexico right now. We might also think about the supervolcano that North Korean nuclear bomb tests might trigger. If that volcano explodes, millions in China and Korea will go with it. There is also a supervolcano that's acting up in Italy. And Hurricane Maria might be the "most catastrophic hurricane to hit Puerto Rico in a century."

The way this building collapsed in Mexico City expressed the mood of our terrible times....
