Well if the mouthpiece says, "“She profited off this tragedy,,,,“She essentially created this fire trap by being a slumlord. [The Ngs] didn’t see the human life, they saw the dollar signs." then it should be a slam dunk in civil court, right?" This is a tragedy, and I feel for those innocents attending the dance who burned to death, but if the Insurance company paid out, and the court didn't press charges, and a criminal court case is pending against the organizers of the illegal dance, then,,,,there's more to this story that we certainly don't know about by this Slog post...

The problem is is that artists activists support buildings like the Ghost Ship. I live in Oakland. A similar building in my neighborhood was set to be shut down by the city - until activists protested that the residence would have no where to go (activists who 'represent' many of the same groups that attended/lived in the ghost ship). So while Ng may or may not be a callous slumlord, there's clearly more forces at work creating the scenario than simple capitalist greed (well, I'm considering bay area housing prices to be out of bounds for this particular discussion).

Please wait...
