The world is not enough for the global investor, whose hunger has no stomach. The earth has limits. It begins, it ends, it is fixed. It can only produce and consume so much wealth in a year. Everyone knows the world in which Amazon is worth a half-trillion dollars is also the one where geese lay the kind of eggs that would result in their extinction in this our one and only real world.

So, when the market learned of Amazon's earthly profits, which were not all that by any means, the value of its otherworldly stock was inflated by as much as 13 percent. Jeff Bezos became the richest man on Tlön for the second time this year.
