Good god, I'll never look at "American Beauty" the same way again...

Wonder what happened to @1, 2, 4,...

All I can say is this makes me sad because I love his work, but the case for him being a life-long manipulative dirtbag is getting to irrefutable... SAD (so to speak)

Let's remember to be great to each other. It's a better way to be.

I feel like this comment is particularly important:

If your father has never rubbed your head or patted you, and if you have suspected your whole life that he is actually repulsed by you or just bored by you [laughs], you’re hungry. And I had gone through puberty at 11. I had to make this happen. And I was terrified to do that with a boy of my own age. You could be beat up.

First because it points to the importance of father figures in the lives of boys. God knows that single mothers do amazing things raising the children that they do, but it's really important for young boys becoming young men to have strong, consistent masculine role models that they can latch on to, ideally fathers.

Second, that last sentence speaks to why gay teens are particularly vulnerable. Personally, I bottled all those feeling inside me as a teenager and was profoundly confused and acted asexual all through high school. Once I was on my own and things clicked, suddenly the floodgates opened. But there was all that time in high school where my peers were discovering dating and dances and starting to explore things sexually: I had none of that, aside from masturbating to pro wrestling late at night.

I hope that making it easier to come out and to find a first guy to date in high school will help with that. Hopefully things have been changing enough in the schools to make that more of possibility.

Now there are accusations about his behavior on his television show.

2016 was the year your favorite celebrities died, and 2017 is the year they simply became dead to you.

It's really hard to take the moralizing of the Hollywood elite during awards shows seriously at this point. I assume if you are male and have anything to do with Hollywood you're a rapist or a kiddie fucker. Wonder who will be next?
14
@12: don't know the specific Hollywood moralizing you're referring to, but it was probably done by a woman, not one of these creeps. and if it was done by Meryl Streep, well, that's the voice of God, and whatever she said was correct.

maybe you're upset about Rob Reiner? is he an alleged creep?
15
@14: Does that also apply to when she defends and applauds child rapist Roman Polanski?

16
@15,
Spot on.

Indeed, Polanski has never denied raping & sodomizing a 14 y/o girl in the 70s. He fled to France before he could be tried (France doesn't have an extradition treaty with the USA). Since then, four more women have accused him of rape. My new problem with the most outspoken Ms. Streep is that she and the academy gave Mr. Polanski an ovation when he won an Academy Award for 'The Pianist' well after these facts were known. In addition, she called her friend, Harvey Weinstein 'god'. Fine.

But she expresses outrage with Trump? This is duplicitous. She and others have lost my respect. The Academy Awards and other awards' shows are 'bully pulpits' largely for the Liberal/Left. It's coming back to haunt them. It's now old and hypocritical. It's the reason I don't watch awards' shows anymore.

No, Streep isn't the 'voice of God'.
