Hmm, I wonder if retailers will get a bailout like the banks did. Let's watch!
2
It's not just Safeway that follows and profiles POC, but QFC does it as well. Not only young POC get profiled, but middle aged ones as well. Not just white supermarket cops, but black ones as well. I have the impression that in some cases, it's not merely about watching somebody who looks like he or she is going to steal, but rather about a desire to obnoxiously project power to the powerless POC to make him or her feel even more powerless.

Email the customer service at the head office about the incident and that will stop the in the grill tailing.

I'm not going to take his tweets seriously when he's trying to be funny. He thinks he's a brilliant stand-up comic, and so do most of his voters. The problem is, he's POTUS, not Dennis Miller.

Who isn't funny either.

progressive's MO is to point out and complain about things they don't like. Nobody has been offering better speech or better ideas - just pointing out shitty things about the status quo and how mad everyone ought to get. Putting in effort beyond pointing and yelling would require actual intellectual depth; instead they complain about everything directly outside of their internet-verse, how Rose McGowan is offering "white lady feminism" instead of ever actually being on anyone's side remotely close to their own, constantly self-ostracizing. Look at what happened to Jamie Kennedy.
6
She thinks Safeway is bad she ought to check out those Asian owned convenience stores and see how those proprietors treat POC customers.
7
It probably won't be too long before the major food retailers start to close down as mentioned in the beginning of this article. Food delivery has been around in large cities for decades. Soon people will order on line then either opt for delivery or go to a central warehouse and pick up the advanced order. No more walking up and down the aisles, no more being followed around.
8
This is largely why I avoid Twitter altogether. The less I see and hear of the POS-in-Chief, the better. ITMFA!
9
Or you could have just said: "Durkan, who, like Murray, is a Centrist (people like Moon and McGinn are on the left, and folks like Oliver and Sawant are on the far left)".
10
@6, Asian homeland security personnel at the Airport aren't much better I suspect. Poring over a legitimate picture ID to the max even more so than the white and black personnel even though you've got residency and a Waspy name.
12
@5 the progressive-left media has warped into a form identical to fox news and breitbart: They exist only to make their readers scared and angry. There's relatively little important news on places like Jezebel or HuffPo; just a series of posts on how angry you should be.
14
@6 alright, you're a racist shithead, we get it already. No need to prove it every day.
15
Sure glad I didn't vote for Nikkita. She certainly has a role in stirring things up and asking questions and being in people's faces. Fine. But this isn't the kind of confrontational person who should be leading our city—or our country. When you have to represent "everyone" you need to not say things and do things that make it really easy for many of your fellow citizens to say you're crazy.
16
Charles of The Stranger says, "This city will become hardened and unlivable for all but the kind of people who voted for and gave loads of cash to Durkan, who, like Murray, is on the right of the neoliberal left." Wow. Seems a little extra dramatic there. Durkan would be a liberal Democrat in most other cities, even on the West Coast. Hardened and unlivable. I guess we will see. Cities evolve. Shit happens. Not everyone will be happy. But pendulums swing. I've lived on Capitol Hill for 35 years. There have been at least three periods of bad economy with empty storefronts and vacancy signs and then a booming economy. Guess what. It will happen again.
18
@14. It's a stereotype. And it's one that has truth to it you sheltered little twerp. You're the racist for pretending it doesn't exist.
19
Is Nikkita upset because she knows for a fact that poc of all races never steal? Or, only black poc never steal? Or, she knows for a fact that the two poc youths in question never steal.

The article doesn't quite explain that.
21
Durkan is center-left and Moon sane left
23
@14 if you think Americans are racist, go to China and find out how they feel about black people there.
24
I don't think calling Durkan a neoliberal is either accurate or useful.

Neoliberalism is a political project characterized by a reduced role of government in public life. Its primary objectives are reducing tariffs and protectionist policies, deregulating industries, cutting government spending, and privatizing public services.

Does Durkan want to do any of that?

I guess if she's opposed to publc broadband, that would qualify as a super soft neoliberal position. But is public broadband really a defining position?

But there's nothing about supporting single family zoning (for example) that's more or less neoliberal than the alternative. If fact, if your goal is to dismantle community groups so developers have an easier time getting permits to build multifamily units, that's also a soft neoliberal position.
25
Also..."A country with little or no money..." is an extremely weird and inaccurate way to describe the United States. Can't really tell what point Charles is actually trying to make by talking about this Bloomberg article,

But @1, A "bailout" for debt burdened retailers would be a good idea. The fed could take over qualified debt from chains and lower their interest payments. It'd be a pretty low risk way to shore up retail jobs and keep payer's in the game who can compete with Amazon. The fed's pretty good at picking company's they can put on a budget and turn around.

Charles doesn't mention this part, but a lot of retail chains are closing their eyes and hoping their problems and cyclical. And they're trying to keep investors on board by upping their pay outs while they're cash negative. The Fed could put an end to that, telling retailers that they have cut investor payouts in order to get the debt relief they want. It would basically repeat the success we had with GM, a deal that MADE MONEY for the public.

Not to mention, the threat of public refinancing might grease wheels and get finance companies who are overreacting to the Amazon threat to lend again.

Paying more attention to black teens than white teens, sure, that seems a bit racist.

But who got hurt by it, here? Did the security guard ask the black teens to leave? Use force against them? Search them? Say anything at all to them?

I can see where the guard's racism might be hurting the store, if it's keeping his attention away from other problems in the store. But how did it hurt the kids?

It's an unpleasant reminder that there are still racists wearing uniforms out there, for sure. But someone's gonna need to use the small words to explain what harm the racist guard did to the black kids.
27
@26,

https://i.pinimg.com/originals/0d/87/3d/…

You're being disingenuous.
28
@27

There's exactly one person in that photo who looks like he's found a socially and mentally healthy way to cope with the situation.

Think about it for a minute. Then watch Nikita Oliver's cell-phone footage of Nikita Oliver again.

Then tell me how the kids in the grocery store were harmed, if you can.
29
@28 when, precisely, did those black teenagers steal merchandise from that store?
30
One of my first interactions with Seattle metro racism was having gone to a QFC in Tacoma with a group of white friends and having security follow me through every.single.isle. My white friends openly laughed that the security guard was following the black guy, in front of him, and he still kept doing it. It was creepy.

I've seen security guard at Southcenter, Everett and the Tacoma mall tail young black kids just looking to hang out, while ignoring white heroine addicts walking with their backpacks low in the isle corners. Hell, I watched a Seatac cop/security/whatever officer go from tailing black friends to, once I pointed it out, turning a 180 and tailing a muslim family in islamic garb.

If you are black or hispanic or native anywhere from Olympia to Bellingham, law enforcement and local security firms all but have huge targets on you. These SPD scandals show that yes, they are looking to harass, hurt, or maybe even kill you if they get the chance.
31
@29

Asking "How were they harmed" when they were targeted by security? If someone pulls a gun on you, but doesnt shoot you, would you say "they didnt harm me so whats wrong"?

Nice logic.
32
@31 I didn't read where the security officer pulled a gun.
33
As much as I want to critic Nikkita, the Safeway security officer no matter how you try to justify his actions was harrassing by intently tailing these two youths. There was no indications the youth had taken anything. If a security officer did that to me at a Safeway or any store, I would be particularly offended as anyone should be and I would have turned around and told him where to go. Its paid stalking. I can't help but think though that Nikkita could have handled the situation better...and just easily chalk it up she is just sour about the elections and trying to gain media prominence again... but quite frankly when you figure she can get on her social media anytime about anything, I can't think of a better way to call attention to store security out right harassing youth. If Nikkita had just gone to the manager and not taken a video, it would have been passed off as do most complaints into thin air. Perhaps we could all get a bit of insight through looking at the world through Nikkita's lense and call out inappropriate behavior. I have for a long time advocated the public to videotape whenever they see any questionable officer activity.
Now if only Nikkita can videotape the SPD everyday. Hmmm?! I nominate!
34
@33 come to reality. Nikkita Oliver noted the a security officer was following two kids; and presumed this was profiling. That's ALL. There no reporting on what the kids did, or didn't do; what the security officer observed that made him assume these kids were likely thieves, any of that. Stick with reality and build your case from there - unless you have a Crystal Ball, in which case, let us know what you saw.

Please wait...
